Four sports to try if you don’t like the gym

Wanting to be fit and having a specific set of body goals doesn’t have to be painful. While many enjoy great gains in the gym, that is not the only destination available that can help you see the results you want. Sports can help you get fit and stay fit and can also open up an entirely new community where you can meet people and make new friends – regardless of whether it is a team sport or solo.

If you don’t enjoy the gym but do want to exercise, then try these four excellent sports. Each offers many great opportunities to customise your experience.

  • Skateboarding

Skateboarding is a great sport and transportation option rolled into one, allowing you to get fit, live more sustainably and also gain access to a great community. There are a variety of different kinds of boards and, in turn, many different ways that you can enjoy skateboarding. For the most full-body workout, hitting a skate park and trying out tricks is the ideal option.

If skateboarding isn’t right for you, you can also rollerblade or use a trick bike. All three are great for trying out tricks at a skatepark and are included in the overarching skateboarding community.

When doing tricks, however, you will want the best Triple 8 wrist guard, pads and helmet. Don’t stop your fun because of an injury; always protect yourself.

  • Cycling

Cycling has a rich history in the UK and Europe. There are so many beautiful and incredible places that cannot be reached by train or bus and can be difficult to get to by car. By biking, you will see more of your city and more of the countryside too. The best part is that there are huge communities of cross-country cyclists. You can join one and follow along on new and interesting routes with people you will become friends with. When you are at your destination, you can enjoy a big meal and have a drink together.

Cycling is also excellent exercise, as it really pushes your muscles and your lungs, allowing you to get a full body workout while also sightseeing.

  • Kayaking

There are many excellent waterways to explore in the UK, and kayaking (and all of its derivatives, including paddle boarding) is an excellent way to get out on the water and enjoy a whole new approach to exercise. There are many great kayaking clubs that you can join so you can meet others and enjoy access to high-quality equipment without having to pay for it (or store it) as well, meaning you can have it all if you want to exercise more and love the water.

  • Climbing

Climbing is a full-body workout that engages the mind and body. It is incredibly fun and can be enjoyed both indoors and outdoors. Get started by finding a local climbing gym near you. Learn the ropes and build your muscles. As you get better, you can try out free climbing or take your climbing to the outdoors (for summer only!).
