Dolphins Embarrassed by Colts in Week One Loss
INDIANAPOLIS- The Miami Dolphins were embarrassed by the Daniel Jones–led Colts in Week 1, falling flat in every phase of the game. Miami’s offense sputtered from the start, the defense struggled to contain Daniel Jones and Michael Pittman Jr., and key injuries only deepened the hole. By halftime, the Dolphins were staring at one of their worst statistical performances in decades, and the Colts never looked back.
First Quarter
- Colts win the toss and start with the ball, Daniel Jones operates RPO’s efficiently getting Tyler Warren (3 receptions) and Michael Pittman Jr involved early. Dolphins bend but don’t break in the red zone and force a field goal. 6 passes 2 runs.
- Big return by Dee Eskridge Dolphins start near midfield (Eskridge and James Daniels get hurt), Tua intercepted by Cam Bynum on third and 8.
- Colts run it down the Dolphins throat and dominate the first quarter. Sack by Bradely Chubb before end of quarter. Colts outgain Dolphins 119-15.
Second Quarter
- Michael Pittman Jr beats Storm Duck on the first play of the quarter 10-0.
- Tua fumbles, colts ball.
- Storm Duck beat again, 18-yard gain, followed by a 20-yard pass. Daniel Jones QB sneak, 17-0.
- Tua sacked twice on the drive, offense all out of sorts.
- Storm Duck injured, Dolphins force a stop and then Matthew Judon runs into the kicker, first down Colts. Big gain for Michael Pittman Jr. Big 4th and one, 1st down to Josh Downs. Dolphins force a field goal, 20-0 at the half.
Third Quarter
- Dolphins start with the ball. Waddle hurt, Tua throws his second pick of the game.
- Huge play to Alec Pierce to start the drive. Dolphins force a field goal, 23-0.
- Big plays by Tyreek and Achane, drive stalls Colt’s ball.
Fourth Quarter
- Colts start the quarter with a touchdown 30-0.
- Touchdown Achane 30-8 after a successful two-point conversion, completed to Julian Hill. Tua burned a timeout on the try.
- Dolphins fail their onside kick attempt, Colts ball.
- Colts field goal is good, 33-8.
- Zach Wilson coming into the game, his first pass as a Dolphin is complete to Tanner Conner. 33-8 Dolphins lose.
Game Notes
- Dolphins come out slow.
- Tyler Warren involved in everything early on.
- Daniel Jones set a career high for passing yards in a first half.
- 1st half splits- Time of Possession: IND – 21:40 MIA – 8:20. Off. Plays IND – 43 MIA – 15. Yards IND – 255 MIA – 43.
- 43 yards in first half, fewest since at least 1991.
- Colts scored on 1st 7 possessions
- Tua finished 14 of 23 for 114 yards 1 TD 2 INT 1 FUMBLE 3 SACKS.
- Colts first regular-season opener win since 2013, when Indianapolis beat the Raiders.
I considered this game a must win and the Dolphins got embarrassed, in every phase of the game. Next week Miami will come home to play the Patriots and look to find some sort of momentum, otherwise this season will get ugly quick.
