Marlins Shake Up Roster, Secure 2nd Straight Sweep

MIAMI — As the Miami Marlins secure a second consecutive series sweep on Thursday, the team shuffled the roster to accommodate some ailing fish.

The Marlins announced before Thursday’s 8-4 win over the Seattle Mariners that outfielder Owen Caissie has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a right calf strain, and Rece Hinds has been called up from Triple-A Jacksonville to take his place.

Caissie is slashing .239/.297/.459/.755 with 12 home runs and 50 RBI in 80 games through his rookie season. Marlins manager Clayton McCullough told reporters during batting practice that “he started to kind of grab on it a little bit” when running during pregame warmups.

“Not something we wanted to really take a chance on,” McCullough said.

Hinds did not start on Thursday but will likely get a chance to make his Marlins debut at some point during the weekend home series against the Cleveland Guardians. Hinds, who the Marlins acquired in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds for Zach McCambley in May, has an .864 OPS, 12 home runs, and 33 RBI through 51 minor league games.

“Right-handed bat that can give us some options to start versus left or come off the bench,” said McCullough. ” He hits the ball incredibly hard, and what intrigued about us is it’s a young player that has some impact potential. The swing decisions being a big theme for him to work on.”

The Marlins are also sending Left-handed reliever John King to the 15-day IL due to a left lateral ankle sprain and replacing him with right-hander Ryan Gusto. McCullough said King suffered his injury while doing pitching drills in the outfield.

“Just went to go catch a ball and stepped awkwardly on the platforms out there and rolled his ankle pretty good,” McCullough said. “It was looking like it was going to be at least a few days he wasn’t going to be able to throw. With the All-Star break coming and the ability to build that in, hopefully it’s not too long.”

King is eligible to be reinstated beginning on July 23.

The Marlins also sent down reliever Zach Brzykcy to Jacksonville to make room for Janson Junk’s return from the injured list. Junk went five innings in his return from the injured list, allowing only two runs on three hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

The Marlins enter the final weekend before the MLB All-Star Break in playoff position and only three games behind the Atlanta Braves in the race for the National League East crown.
