Marlins Snap 12-Game Skid on Walk-Off Win

MIAMI — A 12-game losing streak can only be snapped by a walk-off hit.

It was all the more fitting that the one to deliver the Miami Marlins from darkness was a Conine.

Griffin Conine slapped a line drive over the glove of a desperately diving Bryson Stott to score Heriberto Hernandez and give the Marlins an 8-7 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.

Hernandez tied the game earlier in the ninth on a two-run ground ball up the middle to center field. The bases were loaded after the Marlins led off the inning with back-to-back singles and a hit-by-pitch.

Both Hernandez and Conine homered in the first two innings to initially put the Marlins ahead 3-2. Hernandez went 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs, including his team-high 15th home run of the season.

Conine has hit his fifth home run in his last 15 games, while slashing .318/.362/.705. Conine was one of six different Marlins to collect at least two hits on the night, with Otto Lopez leading the way with a 3-for-5 night to increase his batting average to an MLB high of .331 on the season.

After Conine’s home run, the Marlins added two more runs in the second inning on a double by Jakob Marsee and a triple from Otto Lopez to make it a 5-2 game.

The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run home run by Bryce Harper, his 22nd of the season. They took the lead in the sixth inning on a four-run rally, highlighted by a ground-rule double by JT Realmuto.

Realmuto added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.

Phillies starter Zack Wheeler lasted three innings with five runs allowed on six hits with six strikeouts. Jhoan Duran was charged with the blown save and loss after giving up three runs on five hits with one out.

Marlins starting pitcher Tyler Phillips went five innings with two runs allowed on three hits with five strikeouts.

With the win. The Marlins are no longer just a team spiraling down the drain, but back to being a playoff contender with only two games separating them from the third wild card spot.
