Miami Hurricanes: Kevin Smith aiming high in recruiting RB position

One common trait of this entire Miami Hurricanes coaching staff is that they are solid recruiters. It seems like every member of the coaching staff has really been able to make their presence felt on the recruiting trail. One of those coaches who falls into that category is running backs coach Kevin Smith.

Hired by Miami on January 8, Smith was already able to land former Ole Miss running back Henry Parrish. Parish committed to the Miami Hurricanes on January 16. In two seasons with the Rebels, he ran for 814 yards and five touchdowns. He also caught 28 passes for 232 yards.

Now, it appears that Smith is trying to reshape the running back room once again. As noted by Gaby Urrutia of InsideTheU, Smith made an impression on 2023 four-star running back Mark Fletcher. Fletcher is the seventh overall running back in the 2023 class, and the 26th overall player in his class from the state of Florida per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Numerically, he is rated a 90.

Fletcher has offers from big-time schools. Alabama and Penn State are in the picture right now for his recruitment. It will be up to Smith to shift the focus more towards Miami.

What would Fletcher bring to Miami Hurricanes?

Fletcher measures in at six-foot-one, 225 pounds. In watching some of his tape, it’s obvious why Miami is high on him. He is extremely fast, and does not hesitate when he sees an open hole. Vision and speed are his two best qualities, and that would definitely give the Miami Hurricanes running game a boost. One of the key traits of a running back is how decisive he is as soon as he gets the football. Fletcher certainly makes quick decisions when he has the ball in his hands.

There has been a line of communication between Smith and Fletcher . It sounds like Fletcher is a priority target for Smith. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, and when Fletcher will make his decision.

Kevin Smith is looking to reshape the running back room, and he is going to get the best running backs he can in order to get the job done. He is not looking for players who will merely fill the room, but players who will make an impact within it.

Miami Hurricanes: Four-star WR Hykeem Williams top target for ‘Canes

It was a busy weekend for the Miami Hurricanes, as campus visitors along with the Battle Miami camp coincided with each other. As we continue to sift through the news of this weekend, one particular receiver has piqued Miami’s interest. 2023 four-star wide receiver Hykeem Williams has an interest in Miami, and the interest is mutual. This news was first reported by Gaby Urrutia of 247Sports.

Williams is the 11th overall wide receiver in the 2023 class, and the 11th overall player in his class from the state of Florida per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. His primary recruiter is wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon.

What could he bring to Miami Hurricanes?

Williams measures in at six-foot-three, 195 pounds. He is a very solid outside wide receiver. He is not tremendously quick out of his break, but that’s not his specialty. Williams makes things happen after the catch. Once he has the football in his hands, he can get away from defenders with ease. In that respect, he is an impact playmaker. He is still a tremendous big-play threat, just not initially out of his break.

The Fort Lauderdale native played for Stranahan High School. He caught 31 passes for 693 yards and six touchdowns. in terms of what Miami is trying to recruit at the wide receiver position, he fits exactly the type of play style they are looking for.

Currently, the 2023 Miami recruiting class ranks 44th nationally and fifth overall in ACC per the 247Sports team rankings. The class only has one commitment at the moment in wide receiver Lamar Seymour.

Pairing Williams with a guy like Seymour could spell very good news for Miami. That would give them to playmakers they could build the class around. If the Hurricanes were able to land this commitment, it would give them two commitments for this class, with much of the recruiting cycle still to go.

Miami Hurricanes in good standing with former Oregon offensive lineman

The Miami Hurricanes have been working hard to build their offensive line, and it appears that they may be landing another prospect relatively soon. Logan Sagapolu appears to be focusing on the Miami Hurricanes at the moment. This news was first reported by Matt Shodell of Canesport.com.

Sagapolu is a three-star prospect. A member of the class of 2019, he committed to Oregon on January 20th, 2019. As a recruit, he was the ninth overall center in the 2020 class per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He holds a numerical ranking of just over 87.

Sagapolu entered the transfer portal on January 18, after not seeing any game action at Oregon. He was sidelined for the 2021 season as a result of an injury occurring during fall camp.

Measuring in at six-foot-three, 340 pounds, he is an interior lineman.

What could he bring to the Miami Hurricanes?

When I looked at some of his film from high school, he was a very impressive prospect. One of the things that really stood out to me was his agility. He was able to get to any potential pass-rushers quickly.

In addition to his quick feet, he also played well at the point of attack. As soon as the ball was snapped, he immediately extended his hands and created either pass protection for a quarterback, or a lane for a running back. He is not afraid to play physical, and that is something the Miami Hurricanes need on the line.

The fact that the Miami Hurricanes seem to be in good standing with him is certainly good news. Alex Mirabal could have a chance to work with him. If so, that could be a partnership that is beneficial for both coach and player. Mirabal’s ability to develop talent along with Sagapolu’s natural skill could be a great combination.

We’ll have to see how this recruitment ends up playing out. However, it appears that the Miami Hurricanes are in a good spot to land him. This would be a victory for offensive line recruiting.

Miami Hurricanes make final cut for 2022 DE Jack Pyburn

The Miami Hurricanes got a little bit of a recruiting update on Wednesday as they made the final cut for 2022 three-star edge defender Jack Pyburn

Pyburn is a member of  the 2022 recruiting class, and has an 86 numerical ranking in the 247Sports rankings. In addition to Miami, Auburn is the other school that is in his final two.

Most recently, he took a visit to Auburn on January 14. He was offered by Miami on January 4.

He finished the 2021 season as a defensive playmaker. He recorded 109 tackles and 15 sacks in 11 games with the Bolles School. In three years of recorded statistics, he finished with 263 total tackles, and 28 sacks.

Measuring in at six-foot-three, 255 pounds, Pyburn has tremendous speed off the edge. As soon as the ball is snapped, he is able to accelerate and make a tackle. In some of the highlights I watched on him, he possessed the same skill set at both edge and linebacker. At the linebacker position, he was able to get by the defensive line with ease.

When he played the edge position, he used his speed to overpower the tackle or whoever was guarding him. A lot of times, you see edge players finesse their way into the backfield with quick movements and strength. Pyburn did that as well, but the speed element was a huge factor in his game.

Currently, the 2022 Miami Hurricanes recruiting class ranks 36th nationally and fifth overall in ACC per the 247Sports Team rankings. Miami has done a nice job of looking for edge defenders for this class. Cyrus Moss would be an example of that. Getting Pyburn would certainly add more depth to the position, and it would give Miami another proverbial tool in the tool chest.

With Miami having  good momentum in terms of recruiting, this would be another nice to get for a program that is looking to trend upward in the Mario Cristobal.

Miami Hurricanes: Cyrus Moss notes ‘Canes decision was last-minute

The Miami Hurricanes have had a fast-paced month in terms of recruiting. One of their bigger commitments was  2023 edge defender Cyrus Moss. The four-star commit was the sixth overall edge defender, and the second overall player in the state of Nevada per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Moss committed at the All-American Bowl on January 8.  It was an important commitment for the Miami Hurricanes.  With Miami missing out on wide receiver Kevin Coleman to Jackson State, Moss was able to deliver the positive momentum Miami was expecting that weekend.

In two seasons of recorded statistics, Moss tallied 111 total tackles in 27 games for Bishop Gorman. He also had 23 tackles for a loss. He is coming off a 2021 season that saw him tally 63 tackles.

A last-minute decision

In an interview with Woody Womack of CaneSport.com, Moss gave a little bit of insight into how his decision to come to Miami was a big one.

“Miami kind of shot up out of nowhere. It really was that last weekend when I went down there and visited. I had to come back from that and sit down, and it was only a few days before Signing Day, so  it really was kind of hectic, kind of chaotic. Lots of family talks, family decisions, kind of weighing it all out. But it came way down to the wire.”

Moss’ versatility could suit him well in this Miami Hurricanes defense. He has the ability to rush the passer as well as sit patiently and wait to get into the backfield to disrupt a play. he will certainly be an anchor for a Miami defense that looks to be greatly improved in the coming years.

With Miami landing a successful player in Brevin Jordan out of Bishop Gorman, time will tell if the school could potentially be a pipeline for Miami.

Miami Hurricanes: Elite 2023 QB set to visit Coral Gables this weekend

The Miami Hurricanes have been busy recruiting over the last couple of weeks, and they will have an intriguing visitor this weekend. 2023 five-star quarterback Dante Moore is set to visit Coral Gables while in town for the battle Miami event. This news was first reported by Gaby Urrutia of 247Sports.

Moore is the third overall quarterback in the 2023 class, and the top player in his class from the state of Michigan per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He has offers from all of the big-name schools. In addition to Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Penn State are just some of the schools that have extended an offer his way. He is the most interested in those four.

Moore completed 177-of-244 passes, throwing for 3047 yards, 40 touchdowns and three interceptions for Martin Luther King High school in Michigan. One of the things that sticks out to me in particular about his game is his pocket presence. He does a very good job of being able to set his feet and identify his read quickly to make the throw.

In addition to just what he can do in the pocket, he also is able to make throws on the run. Primarily, it seems like he wants to stay in the pocket to make his throws, and that is certainly his strength. He also possesses a very good deep ball, and is able to deliver the ball with accuracy. There is a reason why he is a highly-rated quarterback, and it is extremely evident when you look at his tape.

Currently, the Miami Hurricanes’ 2023 recruiting class ranks 45th in the country and sixth overall in the ACC per the 247Sports team rankings. That will change quickly, as Miami currently only has one commitment in the class. Lamar Seymour is the only player in the class right now. He committed to Miami back on April 16, 2020.

I’m excited that Moore is coming into town. If he is in town for Battle Miami, it’s encouraging that he wants to visit the campus. Who knows if anything will come from it, but he just adds another big name in what is going to be a productive weekend for Miami.

Miami Hurricanes: Former Clemson WR Frank Ladson is coming home

The Miami Hurricanes were able to get a big pick up for their wide receiver room on Saturday afternoon. Former Clemson wide receiver Frank Ladson announced he was transferring to the program.

Ladson is coming home. He was a highly-coveted wide receiver out of Miami South Dade. A member of the class of 2019, he decided to take his talents to Clemson.

In three seasons with the Tigers, he caught 31 passes for 428 yards and six touchdowns. Injury problems and Covid-19 issues derailed his career at Clemson a bit. Even still, he was able to produce when given the opportunities.

Ladson will have a chance to be a big-time contributor. When you look at all of the wide receiver talent that the Miami hurricanes lost, there will be room for him to make an impact. Charleston Rambo, Mark Pope, and Mike Harley are just some of the names that Miami lost at wide receiver.

A post shared by Frank Ladson Jr. (@frank9.jr)

Measuring in at six-foot-three, 205 pounds, Ladson should fit very well in Miami’s offense. He brings a big-play threat at the receiver position, and he can get downfield. We saw him do it at Clemson, and he should be able to bring the same element of play to Miami. He is also good on intermediate routes. In this respect, he can use his speed on things such as slant plays to make things happen after the catch.

Ladson is the perfect fit for this style of football that is played today. He gives the Miami Hurricanes a big-time weapon. With Tyler Van Dyke showing that he is one of the up-and-coming quarterbacks in college football, this could be a very good match for both receiver and quarterback.

I’m definitely excited to see how Ladson is going to fit into this offense. he has the size and play-making ability to be a top weapon

Miami Hurricanes getting visit from elite 2023 TE next weekend

Recruiting news is flying for the Miami Hurricanes. One particular name to watch is 2023 tight end Mac Markway. He is scheduled to visit Miami next Saturday. This news was first reported by Steve Wilfong of 247Sports.

Markway is the fifth overall tight end in the 2023 class, and the third overall player in his class from the state of Missouri per the 247Sports Composite rankings. A four-star recruit, he initially committed to Florida on July 27. He decommitted from the program on December 19.

In addition to Florida, he had 27 offers. Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, LSU, and Michigan were just some of the schools that extended one his way. He also received offers from Miami and Oregon.

What would he be able to bring to Miami Hurricanes?

Measuring in at six-foot-four, 250 pounds, Markway plays physically. When I watched some of his highlights, I was impressed with the way he was able to block. That’s not to say he lacks receiving skills, he does very well in that department. He is able to find soft spots in defensive zones, and make possession catches. He has solid hands, and relies on the combination of route running and good hands to make plays.

It seems like he functions really well as somebody that can make things happen after the catch, rather than being a big-play, stretch-the-field tight end. That is certainly not a knock on him. Blockers and intermediate route tight ends are equally as important to the offense.

There are other schools in play for Markway. One of those schools is Iowa. He is scheduled to visit Iowa next Sunday. Due to Iowa’s history of developing tight ends, the Hawkeyes may present a challenge to the Hurricanes. We will have to see how this plays out.

Miami Hurricanes hire Kevin Smith as running backs coach

The Miami Hurricanes have a new running backs coach. Tuesday, it was announced that the program hired former Ole Miss running backs coach Kevin Smith for the position. This news was first reported by Five Reasons Sports.

Smith bring an extensive amount of experience. He Joined Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss for two seasons, making the jump from FAU. In 2020, Ole Miss averaged 210.6 rushing yards per game. The Rebels scored 19 touchdowns on the ground.

One of the things that I really like about this hire is that running backs under Smith have had recent success. Devin Singletary had 32 touchdowns in the 2017 season to go along with the 1,918 rushing yards. That 2017 season was fruitful for Florida Atlantic. Singletary ended up accumulating  185.3 yards per game.

Smith was a good running back in his own right, setting tons of records at UCF.

A smart hire for Miami Hurricanes

I like this get for a couple of reasons. For one, Smith has a recent track record of success both as a coach and as a player. For example, Devin Singletary was a successful player at the collegiate level. He is now with the Buffalo Bills in the NFL. In that respect, Smith fits the same type of blueprint as the other coaches on the staff. He has a proven track record of identifying, developing, and getting talent prepared for the next level.

There is also another interesting thing about this higher. Smith landed a commitment from TCU transfer Zach Evans. He officially transferred on January 6. Projected as a second-round running back, Evans ran for 1,063 yards and nine touchdowns in two seasons at TCU. With Smith now in the fold for the Miami Hurricanes, could Evans come along? The latter would certainly be a big boost to the Miami Hurricanes running game.

In any event, this is a big hire by the Miami Hurricanes. Smith brings experience as well as developmental ability to this coaching staff. For those reasons among others, I think he will be a great fit.

Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores has been fired

BREAKING: Miami Dolphins fire coach Brian Flores

In a stunning turn of events, the Miami Dolphins fired head coach Brian Flores one day after the franchise secured back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2002-2003. Jay Glazer of Fox Sports speculated that Flores could be on the hot seat after failing to make the playoffs. He also stated that the franchise would be very short-sighted to do so.

Now, they have done so.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, the firing has nothing to do with the recent availability of Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh. In fact, Darlington claims the Dolphins aren’t even looking at Harbaugh to be Flores’s replacement. Instead, the firing has much more to do with the fact that Flores’s relationship with owner Stephen Ross and GM Chris Grier rapidly deteriorated over the course of the season.

Reports did periodically arise from various sources that Flores was difficult to work with. He has a tendency to come across as the smartest guy in the room, and that attitude sometimes grated on people. Also, reports indicate Flores was fired after refusing to comply with a request to make changes to his coaching staff.

On the other hand, Flores knew how to motivate his players. After going on a 7-game losing streak, he managed to turn the team around and put them on a 7-game winning streak. Unfortunately, he couldn’t lead them over the must-win game against the Tennessee Titans. That knocked them out of the playoffs.

Darlington also reports that the relationship between Tua Tagovailoa and Brian Flores had deteriorated. It got so bad, they did not speak to each other. It was obvious that Flores did not trust Tagovailoa. So, essentially, the decision to fire Flores is an implied commitment to Tagovailoa.

Brian Flores went 24-25 as Miami’s head coach, and he will likely be a very strong candidate for one of the other openings around the league. If he doesn’t become a head coach, he will definitely be a defensive coordinator. Now, the Dolphins will spend the beginning of this offseason looking for someone to fill that void.
