Miami Hurricanes probable landing spot for former Oregon lineman

The Miami Hurricanes could have another offensive lineman coming their way. Former Oregon lineman Jonathan Denis signed with the Ducks in the class of 2020. He entered the transfer portal on Sunday night, and there is a possibility he could end up with the Hurricanes.

As a recruit, Denis was a three-star lineman. He was the 14th overall offensive guard in the 2020 class, and the 53rd overall player in his class from the state of Florida per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Denis committed to Oregon on July 27, 2019.

He did not see any action while at Oregon. While at South Dade High School, he was a two-year letterman, and a team captain as a senior.

Denis could end up with the Miami Hurricanes, as noted in a report by CaneSport.com. This would make sense, as he was recruited by Alex Mirabal while at Oregon.

Reunion with Mirabal could be good for Denis

Mirabal could help Denis continue to develop. Measuring in at six-foot-three, 279 pounds, Denis is a very sturdy lineman. As soon as the ball is snapped, he immediately engages his hands. He can also go up against edge defenders, which buys his quarterbacks enough time to scramble out if pressure is coming off the edge. He is very sound in his technique.

The Miami Hurricanes have a solid base on the offensive line. Center Jakai Clark, guard/tackles DJ Scaife and Justice Oluwaseun as well as guard Jalen Rivers all figure to be pieces on the line. Denis adds depth to the line, and gives Cristobal and Mirabal another one of their former recruits.

This would be another solid get for the Miami Hurricanes, as they continue to build their program in the Cristobal era.  Each day, the foundation for the future of the program is being set. Getting another physical lineman in the fold would add to that.

Miami Hurricanes land former UCLA edge defender Mitchell Agude

The Miami hurricanes were able to continue the positive vibes from Thursday night, as they were able to land a commitment on Friday. UCLA edge defender Mitchell Agude committed to the program.

Agude chose Miami over Oregon, Washington, and Tennessee. He had a host of people involved in his recruitment. Defensive analyst Jason Taylor, defensive line coach Joe Salave’a, and defensive ends coach Rod Wright were all involved in his recruitment. As Gaby Urrutia noted in his report, this was something Agude took notice of.

This is another big grab for the Hurricanes in terms of edge defenders. In the last two seasons at UCLA, he recorded 78 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 4 ½ sacks, and seven forced fumbles. His explosiveness off the edge is something that Miami has been looking for. When you think about how the edge position has evolved over the years, it’s now gone from a niche position to something that coaches recruit heavily.

Miami Hurricanes have benefited from transfer portal

As a senior, he will have only one more year of eligibility. His addition now marks the seventh transfer for the Miami Hurricanes. In this particular class, defense has been something that the Miami Hurricanes have been able to land via the portal. Some of the more notable names include defensive lineman Jake Lichtenstein , defensive lineman Antonio Moultrie, and cornerback Daryl Porter.

Agude will have a chance to make an immediate impact, and this should allow him to be a key part of the defensive line. Miami wants to establish dominance at the edge position, and it’s interesting to see things come full circle. Who knows about dominance at the edge position? Jason Taylor.

Now Agude will have a chance to make a mark of his own, as the Miami Hurricanes look to usher in a new era of football. One thing appears to be certain. Defensive experience is a priority for the program. In terms of recruiting, Mario Cristobal is red hot right now.

Miami Hurricanes land pair of athletic brothers for ’23 class

The Miami hurricanes received commitments from a pair of brothers on Thursday night. Four-star athlete Robby Washington and three-star linebacker Bobby Washington both committed to the program on Thursday night. This was first reported by Andrew Ivins of 247Sports.

Robby is the eighth overall athlete in the 2023 class, and the 16th overall player in his class from the state of Florida per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Bobby is the 50th overall linebacker in his class, and the 97th overall player in his class from the state of Florida per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Measuring in at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, Robbie played both the running back and wide receiver positions in high school. As a receiver, he shows tremendous athleticism. He is able to make things happen after the catch, and is able to use that athleticism to make plays. He does a nice job of adjusting to balls in the air, and has tremendous agility when catching the football.

What can Bobby bring to Miami Hurricanes?

Bobby Washington does a good job of tackling in the open field. He can identify a play quickly, and takes good angles in order to make a tackle. The fact that he is a good open-field tackler is important. Matchups are won and lost in the open field. Measuring in at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, Washington as the agility needed in today’s offensive-minded game of college football. In addition to being versatile, he is also physical. He immediately wraps up and is able to make a sound contact on tackles.

The 2023 Miami Hurricanes recruiting class is continuing to rise the class ranks 19th nationally and third overall in the ACC per the 247Sports Composite rankings. Robby is now the highest-rated commitment in the class.

Overall, the Miami Hurricanes were able to get a pair of good athletes. Robby should add an immediate spark to the offense, while Bobby adds additional physicality to the defense.  Thursday was indeed a successful day for the Miami Hurricanes.

Miami Hurricanes: WR Brandon Inniss sets visit date to Coral Gables

Things have picked up for the Miami Hurricanes on the recruiting trail, and they are going to get a visit from a wide receiver target next Thursday. Five-star wide receiver Brandon Inniss is set to visit Coral Gables on March 24. He made the announcement via Twitter.

Inniss is the top wide receiver in the 2023 class, and the third overall player in his class from the state of Florida per the 247Sports composite rankings. Right now, he has been leaning towards USC, according to Crystal Ball predictions.

Even though Miami is not appear to be the favorite for his recruitment, the Hurricanes have still managed to stay in contact with him. Back in January, Mario Cristobal was still frequently in contact with the wide receiver.

With the type of recruiter that Cristobal is, the Hurricanes are certainly not out  of Inniss’s recruitment by any means. A visit to Miami could change his mind. Cristobal’s recruiting pitches are detailed, and set clear expectations. Getting the receiver to the campus to hear that pitch could work in the Hurricanes favor.

Innis would strengthen Miami Hurricanes recruiting class

Inniss’s would be an ideal downfield threat for the Hurricanes. He possesses that playmaking ability, and is able to make things happen after the catch. His speed and ability to get by defenders are two of his biggest assets.

Currently, the 2023 Miami recruiting class is setting up to be a good one. The class itself currently ranks 24th nationally and third overall in ACC per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Antonio Tripp was the most recent commit for the class. The class has three commitments overall.

Even though the Miami Hurricanes may be on the outside looking in,  Inniss’s visit to campus next Thursday will be important. Whether or not Miami will be able to make any headway remains to be seen. Nevertheless, they will give it their best shot.

Miami Hurricanes trying to flip Oklahoma OL commit Joshua Bates

Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal is a master recruiter, and it appears he is trying to flip  an Oklahoma commitment. Miami is going after offensive lineman Joshua Bates, per CaneSports’ Matt Shodell.

Bates is the 36th overall interior offensive lineman in his class, and the fourth overall player in his class from the state of Colorado per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He committed to the Oklahoma Sooners on August 13, 2021

Offensive  line coach Alex Mirabal is Bates’ primary recruiter for Miami.

What could Bates bring to Miami Hurricanes?

Measuring in at 6-foot-3, 280 pounds, base is extremely physical on the line. Once the ball is snapped, he is immediately able to get leverage on his man. He extends his hands quickly, and that allows him to use his physicality and when the snap. This is something that is common with the type of lineman that this Miami staff wants. They have to be physical, and they have to be able to create holes quickly. Bates can certainly do that, and his physicality is one of his biggest assets.

Even with only two commitments in the 2020 recruiting class, the class itself ranks 30th nationally and fifth overall in the ACC per the 247Sports Team Rankings. This is the first opportunity that the Miami hurricanes  will have to put together a full recruiting class with this staff. With the prospects they are going after, we could see this class turn into a top 15 one very soon.

With Miami looking for impactful offensive lineman it makes sense that Bates is on their radar. Especially with the Mirabal connection, it would be difficult to count Miami out  on his recruitment. Time will tell if the coaching staff will be able to  pry Bates away from Oklahoma. Nevertheless, they have begun to at least put their feelers out on his recruitment.

Miami Hurricanes swing for fences with Jason Taylor hire

As Mario Cristobal continues to build a top-notch coaching staff, another big name be added to the fold. Hall of Famer Jason Taylor is expected to join the Miami hurricanes staff in an off-field role per InsideTheU’s Gaby Urrutia.

Taylor made his name first on the gridiron, as he recorded 520 tackles, 139.5 sacks and 40 forced fumble’s while a member of the Miami Dolphins. Taylor spent 13 years with Miami finding tremendous personal success.

Taylor has been able to find success in the coaching ranks as well. Currently the defensive coordinator at St. Thomas Aquinas, the school has been able to win three consecutive 7A state titles.

This hire is just another notch in the belt for both Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes. We have talked about the depth of the coaching staff ever since the head coach was hired. Every coaching position is one of strength on this staff.

What can Taylor do for Miami Hurricanes?

Bringing in a guy like Taylor will be able to just give the coaching staff another set of eyes. Taylor was one of the best ever do it at his position. Another important piece to this is that he could help the Miami Hurricanes in recruiting. He is a familiar face in  not only the Miami area but the state of Florida. That combined with his knowledge of the game makes this a big get for the Miami Hurricanes program.

As far as coaching positions are concerned,  Cristobal has swung for the fences. Having somebody with as much football talent as Taylor in an analyst role just speaks to how deep this coaching staff truly is. It’s a testament to how people believe in what Cristobal is doing, and how people want to work for him.

Results on the field are what matter. However, at the end of the day, bringing Taylor into the program is a win for the Miami Hurricanes.

Miami Hurricanes: Josh Gattis wants to revitalize running game

As a new era of Miami Hurricanes football begins, we are already seeing some of the members of the coaching staff wanting to set expectations. For offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, getting the run game going is important.

Miami certainly has work to do in that area. They averaged 127 yards per game in 2021, which ranked 97th in the country and 12 in the ACC. They averaged 3.69 yards per carry, which was 102nd in the country.

Obviously, those are not exactly great numbers. However, if you look at what Gattis has been able to get out of his running game recently, there are certainly reasons for hope.

In 2021, Michigan’s rushing attack was one of the best in the country. Hassan Haskins was second in the Big Ten in rushing yards with 1,327. His positional partner Blake Corum had 952 yards on the ground, good enough for eighth in the Big Ten. Haskins averaged 4.9 yards per carry, Corum averaged 6.6. Together, they were able to help pace a Michigan offense that led all of the Big Ten with 39 touchdowns.

Recent trends bode well for Miami Hurricanes

If getting the run game going is a focus for Miami, they certainly have a good coordinator to get it done with. Not only do they have a good coordinator, they have a running back room with depth. Two guys that should be able to help get the job done are Henry Parrish and Jaylan Knighton.

Knighton  had 561 yards and eight touchdowns in eight games. He averaged 3.9 yards per carry. Parrish rushed for 551 yards and three touchdowns as the third-string running back for Ole Miss last season. For a third-string back, that is certainly decent production.

There is no doubt that Haskins and Corum were good at Michigan. I have reason to believe that Knighton and Parrish can be a formidable one-two tandem as well. When you look at how those Michigan running backs were able to help the Michigan offense, they were put in positions to succeed via good playcalling. Now it’s up to Gattis to make sure the Miami Hurricanes running back room is in a similar position. Can he make that happen? If recent history is any indication, I would say yes.

Gattis wants the running game to be a focus, and he has a recent track record of success that indicates he can get that done. It is an achievable goal, and it will be intriguing to see how it develops over the course of the spring.

Miami Hurricanes: WVU transfer Daryl Porter Jr. adds to ‘Canes secondary

Late Friday night, the Miami Hurricanes landed a commitment from former West Virginia cornerback Daryl Porter Jr.

Porter will have three years of eligibility left, as he becomes the sixth transfer to come to Miami. He brings with him a bunch of experience. He played 716 overall snaps, allowing 34 receptions recorded 16 yards and three touchdowns in 2021. Porter did have an interception on the year.

The move to Miami from Porter’s perspective makes sense to me. For one, he gets to reunite with Jahmile Addae. Addae recruited Porter to West Virginia, so it is no surprise the two have reunited at Miami.

Many times, recruits will stay in touch with their position coach if the coach goes to a different school. With how much movement there is in college football nowadays, a situation like that is not surprising. One has to wonder if Porter and Addae stayed in touch.

What can he bring to Miami Hurricanes?

Porter has a quick reaction time, and is able to use it to make plays. Measuring in at five-foot-10, his speed is his biggest asset. In addition to being a cover corner, he is also not afraid to come down and make a play. He had five games with at least five tackles in 2021, and was fourth on the team in that category. His five pass deflections led the team.

Porter’s versatility will be able to help the Miami Hurricanes. They already have a strong secondary, and now, he adds to it. Between his ability to cover, and ability to make tackles, this is another big get for Miami.

He is the highest-rated transfer and Miami’s 2022 class. The class itself ranks 15th nationally and third overall in ACC per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Overall, this is another big addition for the Miami Hurricanes. They are adding to what is already a strong secondary, and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top at the position.

Report: Miami Hurricanes targeting UGA DB coach Jahmile Addae

The Miami Hurricanes are continuing to go after big-time coaches. Now, they are targeting Georgia defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae.

Addae is a Florida native. He has experience in coaching for both Georgia and West Virginia. In 2020, he helped captain a West Virginia defense that allowed 159.6 passing yards per game, the fewest in the country. They finished fourth in total defense with 283.5 yards allowed per game, and were able to snag 11 interceptions.

He also had a strong hand in making the Minnesota Golden gophers special teams unit one of the best in the country. In 2018, the Golden Gophers return unit was tops in the nation with 22.3 yards per return. Their punt return defense was number two in the nation that year as well.

In terms of recruiting, he is currently one of the one of the best recruiters in the country. According to 247Sports, he ranks second in the country right now with six commitments for the 2022 class. The average numerical ranking for them is a 96.93. He knows how to recruit.

What would he be able to bring to Miami Hurricanes?

Overall, the Miami Hurricanes would be able to land a coach that is well-versed in all aspects of football. He is able to run efficient, tight units. He is experienced in several aspects of the game, and that would allow him to be yet another member on the staff that can do multiple things well.

The Miami hurricanes would be landing a complete coach if they were able to get Addae to Miami. He knows how to get the most out of his players, and he knows how to put players in positions to succeed. This would be another home run higher for Mario Cristobal and the coaching staff, and I honestly would not expect anything less at this point. Mario knows what he wants. More often than not, what Mario wants, Mario gets.

Miami Hurricanes land disruptive playmaker in Ahmad Moten

The Miami Hurricanes had a busy National Signing Day on Wednesday. They were able to land to major commitments. One of those commitments was defensive lineman Ahmad Moten.

Moten played football at Cardinal Gibbons High School. he is the brother of former Miami Hurricanes four-star defensive lineman Anthony Moten. The younger Moten is a three-star recruit.

He had offers on the table from the likes of Miami, Iowa State, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. Nevertheless, he chose to stay home. He was recruited by defensive line coach Joe Salave’a.

Moten played well for Cardinal Gibbons in 2021. He totaled 29 tackles in two sacks in his senior season.

What is he able to bring to Miami Hurricanes?

Moten has good skills for his position. Measuring in at six-foot-three, 290 pounds, he is able to both rush the passer and stuff the run. One of the things that I noticed immediately about the way he played was that he can move quickly. He is not slow in his movement. As soon the ball is snapped, he fires off the snap and is able to get into the backfield quickly.

Moten’s agility is going to be something that works in the Miami Hurricanes favor. He can shed blocks quickly, and that allows him to be a disruptor. In some of his film that I’ve watched, he didn’t get to the quarterback all the time. However, he was still able to impact the play by using that athleticism to get into the backfield and throw the offenses timing off.

The 2022 Miami Hurricanes recruiting class ranks 14th overall nationally and third in the ACC per the 247Sports Team Rankings. The class itself currently has six players already enrolled in the school.

One of the things that the Miami Hurricanes have done well in this class is getting agile defenders. Moten certainly fits the bill there. Although he doesn’t have the same skill set as a defensive end for instance, he is still able to use his speed to be a disruptive force.

It was an up-and-down day for the Miami Hurricanes, but the commitment of Moten certainly was a positive thing.
