Liam Hicks Homers Twice in Marlins Win

MIAMI — Liam Hicks hit two home runs and Max Meyer tossed seven scoreless innings to lead the Miami Marlins to a 4-1 win over the New York Mets on Saturday at loanDepot park.

Owen Caissie drove in two runs for the second straight game and Liam Hicks hit two solo home runs for his 44th RBI of the season, keeping him second in the National League leaderboard.

Throughout the 33 years of Marlins baseball, many hitters have bashed over 10 home runs through the first 50 games of a season. Hicks, in his second year as a Major Leaguer, has become the first Marlin in franchise history to hit over 10 home runs with fewer than 20 strikeouts over his first 50 games of a season.

Meyer earned his fifth win of the season by allowing only one hit and three walks with eight strikeouts. He is still the only starting pitcher in the big leagues to have yet to be charged with a loss this season.

The Mets scored their only run of the game in the ninth inning against Andrew Nardi. Tyrone Taylor reached on a pinch hit double and scored on a single by Mark Vientos. Nardi stayed in the game, bear down, and got the final out to secure the win.

The Marlins (24-29) went from losing three straight games to now winning back-to-back games with a chance at their first series sweep since the opening series against the Colorado Rockies.

The Marlins will send Tyler Phillips as a starting pitcher for the first time this season in the series finale on Sunday. Phillips has routinely thrown three innings out of the bullpen and will likely be stretched to five innings.
