SUNRISE, Fla. — Thursday night saw the Edmonton Oilers return to Amerant Bank Arena for the first time since Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

 

Like it went down last June, the Panthers defeated the Oilers in a close contest on home ice — though this one didn’t matter nearly as much — coming away with a 4-3 win. 

 

“Playing against these guys it’s always a big game, especially after what happened last year,” said Carter Verhaeghe who scored the game winning goal on Thursday. “I think getting the best of them tonight kind of sent a message and we liked the way we played. We kind of grinded it out but we got the win, which is most important.”

 

In the victory, the Panthers improved to 36-21-3 on the season and jumped the Toronto Maple Leafs for the Atlantic Division lead. 

 

Sergei Bobrovksy had 24 saves — with nine of those coming in the third — to pick up his 24th win of the season.



Stuart Skinner stopped 32 of 36 shots in the loss and the Oilers losing streak extends to five games, dating back to Feb.7 before the 4 Nations break. 

 

No love was lost between last season’s Cup finalists. 2:52 into the game Corey Perry and A.J. Greer (who wasn’t on the Panthers last season) got the arena going with an early fight.

 

Carter Verhaeghe thought he opened the scoring 7:15 into the game on the power-play, however the goal didn’t stand after a successful coach’s challenge by the Oilers confirmed the play was offside. 

 

The Panthers would eventually get that opening goal back about five minutes later thanks to Uvis Balinskis, who beat Skinner low glove-side for his fourth goal of the season.

“He can really take over and dominate a game,” Nate Schmidt said of Lundell. “I think that’s something that as a young player he’s only learning to get better and better at. It’s going to be fun to watch his progression as a young kid growing into a man in this league and understanding what he can do on a daily basis.”

 

The NHL’s top scorer Leon Draisaitl didn’t let his team trail for long. Exactly two minutes after Lundell’s go-ahead goal, Draisaitl equalized with his league-leading 44th goal of the season, knotting things up at 2-2 before the final period of play. 

 

With the score at a deadlock in the third, an unlikely scorer put the home team up once again. 

 

Nate Schmidt beat Skinner off the rush for his fifth goal of the season, giving the Panthers a 3-2 lead.   

 

Lundell spun off John Klingberg’s pressure along the boards to hit A.J. Greer at full steem, who then fed a drop pass to Schmidt, who buried the go-ahead goal. 

 

Verhaeghe, who had a goal wiped off the board in the first, doubled the Panthers lead with the eventual game winner a little under three minutes after Schmidt lit the lamp. 

 

After going down two, Zach Hyman gave the Oilers a chance after tucking away his 20th goal of the season — cutting the deficit to one with 3:25 to play — but the comeback effort fell short for a struggling Oilers squad.

He added: “I thought the last eight minutes we looked the way we were supposed to.”

Panthers Come Up Short in 2-1 Loss to Kraken

SUNRISE, Fla. — After the NHL paused for two weeks due to the 4 Nations Face-Off break, the Florida Panthers returned to action on Saturday night against the Seattle Kraken. 

 

With the game tied 7:03 into the third period, Jaren McCann scored the game winner with his 15th goal of the season, leading the Kraken to a 2-1 road victory.

 

Goaltender Joey Daccord stood on his head for the visitors, stopping 26 shots en route to his 20th win of the season. 

 

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 20 of 22 shots faced as the Panthers fell to 34-20-3 in the season.

 

Kappo Kakko also scored for the Kraken, opening the scoring 6:32 in the game after sneaking a tight angle shot under Bobrovsky’s near post for his 10th goal of the season. 

 

Eetu Luostarinen had the Panthers lone goal, picking up his eighth of the season after linking up with Anton Lundell. The duo combined for a similar goal last week when they played for Finland in the 4 Nations tournament. 

 

“Great play by Lundy,” Luostarinen said of the assist. “This time I [was the one] that scored.” 

 

Mackie Samoskevich appeared to have given the Panthers their first lead of the game after he roofed a shot top shelf. The Kraken challenged the play for goaltender interference as Evan Rodrigues was inside the crease.

 

Video review deemed that there was goaltender interference, with Rodrigues “going into the crease on his own.” The goal was overturned.

 

“They don’t give you explanations, I heard the explanation (from the official’s announcement),” Panthers head coach Paul Maurice responded when asked if he was given an answer for the goal coming back. “We can’t touch a goalie in the blue paint and I guess we did.” 

 

He added: “I’m not sure I would’ve challenged it. So he’s right and I’m wrong.”

 

The Panthers had a league-high eight players participate in the 4 Nations Face-Off, including three who played in Thursday’s Canada-USA title game: Sam Bennett and Sam Reinhart (CAN) and Matthew Tkachuk (USA). 

 

Seven of the eight players who returned from international duty played on Saturday night for the Panthers, with Tkachuk (lower-body) being the one absentee. Paul Maurice said Saturday morning that Tkachuk is going to be evaluated on Sunday and Monday, “then we’ll have a real clear plan after that.”

 

The Panthers hit the road for one game to face the Nashville Predators on Tuesday Night. When they return, a 2024 Stanley Cup rematch against the Edmonton Oilers will welcome them on Thursday in Sunrise. 

 

GAME NOTES

Brandon Montour and Josh Mahura both made their return to Sunrise on Saturday night with the Kraken.

Montour played in 300 games (regular and postseason) across three-and-a-half seasons with the Panthers. The 30-year-old defenseman was a huge reason why the Panthers made back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances, and eventually won in 2024.

 

Mahura, also a member of the 2024 Stanley Cup winning team, played in 112 regular season and 21 postseason games with the Panthers — appearing in every playoff game during the team’s run to the 2023 Stanley Cup Final.

‘This was a win for 40-plus million people’: Canada defeats U.S. in Overtime to Claim 4 Nations Gold

BOSTON — Once again, Canada sits atop the hockey world. 

 

Rivalry and hatred between the two teams, two nations, have been at an all time high. This tournament meant more than just hockey.

 

15 years after current team Canada captain Sidney Crosby scored one of the biggest golden goals in hockey history at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics — in a 3-2 overtime win over the Americans — Connor McDavid, the Richmond Hill, ON. native who has been searching for that “big” moment, scored the golden goal to win Canada the 4 Nations Face-Off title — in a 3-2 overtime win over the Americans.

 

“He’s a big game player,” Crosby said of McDavid. “He’s proven that throughout his career. I’m sure this one means a lot to him. It meant a lot to us.”

 

It certainly felt like a passing of the torch moment for McDavid, who was 13 when Crosby won Canada the gold in Vancouver, to score the winner. However that isn’t how he sees it.

 

“Well I think you’re going to see Sid in 12 Months [at the Olympics]  so I don’t think this is the passing of any torch,” said the 28-year-old. “Sid had a great tournament. He was a big part of our group and we’ll see him in a year’s time.” 

 

“It seems for him, it’s really fitting,” Crosby added on McDavid scoring the winner. “The level that he plays at, he’s got that ability every single night to change a game. He’s proven it time and time again, and he proved it in one of the biggest moments tonight.”

 

With best-on-best international hockey back after nearly a decade without NHL participation, Canada continued where they left off, winning. 

 

Including the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off — a designated NHL international tournament — Canada has won the past four international competitions involving NHL players: claiming Olympic gold in 2010 and 2014, and winning the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

 

Like they did on Saturday in round-robin play against the Americans, Canada opened the scoring 4:48 into the first thanks to a beautiful goal from Nathan MacKinnon.

 

MacKinnon swiftly skated around the U.S. zone before wiring a shot over Connor  to put Canada up 1-0 with his fourth goal of the tournament. 

 

Canada continued to press the Americans with quality chances around the goal. Luckily for the Americans, Hellebuyck used all of his 6’4 frame to stand his ground and keep it a one-goal game.

 

A once lively TD Garden crowd became quiet after the Canadians opened the scoring. 

 

Brady Tkachuk fixed that issue.

 

After a wrap-around attempt by team USA’s captain Auston Matthews left the puck sitting in front of Jordan Binnington’s goal, the younger Tkachuk brother buried his third goal of the tournament.  

 

When the Americans took down Canada 2-1 on Saturday in Montreal, they scored two unanswered goals after Connor McDavid opened the scoring in the first. 

 

In Thursday’s rematch, team USA once again took the lead in the second period. 

 

Jake Sanderson, who was a late addition to the American roster after it was deemed that defenseman Quinn Hughes wasn’t fit to play, scored his first goal of the tournament 7:32 into the second to put the U.S. up 2-1. 

 

The United States flipped the script, again.

 

Sam Bennett was a healthy scratch in Canada’s opener against the Swedes. After making his 4 Nations debut last Saturday against the Americans in Montreal, the Florida Panthers forward remained in the Canadian lineup. His physicality was a big addition to the Canadian roster — it’s why he made the team. 

 

A big-game performer in his own right, Bennett, a 2024 Stanley Cup champion with the Panthers, tied the game with six minutes to go in the second. 

 

Mitch Marner threaded a tight angle pass to a net-bound Bennett, who roofed the equalizer over Hellebuyck, making it 2-2 with his first goal of the tournament. 

 

This score would remain until McDavid’s eventual OT winner, which was his third goal of the tournament. 

 

“I just hope Canada is proud,” head coach Jon Cooper said in his postgame press conference. “Every player in that room is proud to be a Canadian. And yea, did we need a win? Not only our team, but Canada needed a win.”

 

“This one was different. This wasn’t a win for themselves (the players). This was a win for 40-plus million people. The guys knew it and they delivered.”

Sandy Alcantara Gets the Nod for Opening Day

The Miami Marlins are turning to their ace as they kick off the 2025 season, with Sandy Alcantara officially named the Opening Day starter against the Pittsburgh Pirates on March 27. This marks Alcantara’s fifth career Opening Day start, extending his franchise record among pitchers.

Returning From Injury and Ready to Lead

After missing the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery, the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner is ready to reclaim his role as the leader of Miami’s rotation. New Marlins manager Clayton McCullough confirmed the decision Thursday, stating that the team is eager to see Alcantara back on the mound.

“We informed Sandy that he’s going to be our Opening Day starter,” McCullough said. “No secret there, but it was a long journey coming back from last year. Organizationally, we’re very excited, and the fanbase will be excited to see Sandy take the hill on Opening Day.”

Alcantara has been dominant in his previous Opening Day outings, posting a 2.31 ERA over 23 1/3 innings. His ability to work deep into games is a luxury for a Marlins bullpen that struggled with overuse last season.

Team president Peter Bendix also weighed in on Alcantara’s return, emphasizing both his physical readiness and leadership role within the clubhouse.

“Sandy is here right now. Sandy looks as good as I think he’s ever looked in his career. He was sitting 98 miles an hour in a side session out on the field looking like he was just playing catch. That’s uncommon. That’s unusual. But really the even more unusual thing is the degree to which Sandy is that leader. He is the leader that everyone else looks to, and he is helping set the tone. So, I’m thrilled that he’s here.”

Opening Day Matchup: A Potential Pitchers’ Duel

Pittsburgh has yet to officially name its Opening Day starter, though 2024 All-Star Paul Skenes is the likely candidate. The hard-throwing right-hander, one of baseball’s top young pitchers, would provide a thrilling duel against Alcantara in a matchup featuring two power arms.
