Mental Resilience in BJJ: How Training Shapes Strong Mind Beyond the Mat?

BJJ is often described as “mental chess.” You are required to think several moves ahead, developing mental toughness and problem-solving skills. Practicing martial arts like BJJ makes you both physically and mentally strong. It helps with stress, depression, getting some active escapism, improving focus and confidence 100x more than weight lifting. 83% of practitioners report improved mental health with the hard BJJ training and sparring sessions.

The skills learned in BJJ often extend beyond the mat. The discipline, focus, and emotional resilience cultivated through training contribute positively to personal and professional environments. Successful individuals frequently cite BJJ as instrumental in shaping their character and work ethic.

“The Principles of BJJ can be applied to everyday life. You have to stay calm when you are in a bad mood. You need to cover and conceal your intent with other maneuvers. You need to prioritize your focus of effort. When you make a move, you have to believe in what you are doing. You have to be mentally strong and keep an open mind” –Rickson Gracie, BJJ blackbelt.

How does BJJ Improve Mental Health?

Jiub Jitsu reduces stress hormones, enhances self-confidence, and improves mood, which leads to a better mind. What you learn on the mats will help you in the real world, even if that has nothing to do with protecting yourself. Here is how it helps in shaping mental health:

Building Confidence and Discipline

An analysis indicated that more than 87% feel an increase in self-confidence after advancing through the BJJ belt system. As students progress through the ranks, they receive colored belts, symbolizing their skill level. This recognition boosts self-esteem and motivates individuals to continue their practice. BJJ also promotes discipline. Regular practice sessions promote a sense of commitment. Practitioners learn the importance of setting goals and the dedication required to achieve them.

Learn to Overcome Challenges

Every roll on the mat includes overcoming obstacles, whether with a challenging opponent or mastering a complex technique. Through grappling with these challenges, practitioners learn resilience. They realize that failure is a part of the process. This growth mindset enables them to tackle difficulties in life more effectively. As Olympic medalist and BJJ practitioner Ronda Rousey noted,Winning is important, but it is the strength to face defeat that truly matters.”

Stress Management Through Physical Activity

Many BJJ practitioners say that when they are on the mat, they don’t think about anything else. It’s a mental escape. Engaging in this combat sport promotes the release of endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Regular training helps practitioners combat stress and enhances their ability to manage their emotions effectively. Training demands complete focus. This concentration helps individuals forget their daily stressors, leading to a mental reset.

Improve Problem Solving Skills

Training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) significantly enhances mental resilience and intelligence. Practitioners often find themselves in tough positions on the mat, requiring them to think instantly and adapt. This continuous adjustment builds mental strength over time. As they practice various techniques, they learn to stay calm under pressure. Wearing a snug fit custom BJJ rashguard, they realize that each struggle is an opportunity for growth, reinforcing their ability to face challenges in daily life.

Leading to Better Focus and Concentration

BJJ requires intense focus during training. Each session demands full attention, whether while grappling with a partner or executing specific moves. This level of concentration helps practitioners tune out distractions from their personal lives. Many find that this mental discipline extends to their work or studies, allowing them to perform better in various tasks. Using high-quality BJJ gloves during practice adds to this experience; they feel secure and confident, enabling them to master all techniques confidently.

Develop Better Coping Mechanisms

Practicing BJJ equips you with coping mechanisms for life’s stresses. Strategic thinking helps clear the mind and release pent-up tension. This dynamic martial art teaches to approach challenges methodically, whether in competition or everyday scenarios. Over time, they learn that setbacks on the mat are not failures but steps toward improvement. This perspective shift allows them to navigate stressors outside the gym, applying lessons learned during training about resilience.

Lead to Goal Oriented Mindset

BJJ encourages a growth mindset by emphasizing the importance of learning from every experience. During training, practitioners face challenges to continually refine their techniques. Whether it’s mastering a new submission or reversing a dominant position, each encounter teaches lessons. This perspective helps students recognize that improvement is a continuous process that leads to personal development.

Building Self-Control and Patience

The nature of BJJ training teaches self-control and patience. Sparring with a partner requires knowing when to push and when to maintain composure. This control often translates into daily life. It helps individuals face stressful situations with a calmer demeanor. As they can manage their emotions on the mat, they find it easier to navigate real life situations. This newfound patience leads them to mental resilience.

Final Words: The Life Long Mental Effect of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

BJJ extends its influence far beyond the mat, making itself into the fabric of one’s mental health. This martial art fosters many mental benefits through continuous training and dedication. Equipping students with the ability to adapt, overcome adversities, and tackle complex problems translates into mental resilience. This mindset empowers practitioners in their professional and personal lives, fostering a strong character. Jiu Jitsu’s comprehensive approach to both mind and body ensures its lifelong impact is profound and beneficial.

Basketball Betting Explained: Moneylines, Spreads, and Totals

So, you want to get into basketball betting but don’t know where to start? Well, don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Even if you are a long-term basketball fan, you might still get confused by all the moneylines and spreads.

Opening up betting and seeing all the strange names might feel more like financial jargon than basketball lingo. But it’s not as complicated as it seems.

You just need to understand a few things like types of bets, how to read the odds, and betting strategies, and once you know all that, you should apply your basketball knowledge to try to predict an upcoming game.

With that said, don’t expect to get rich quickly here. Basketball betting is unpredictable and even if you know a lot of things about the sport, there is a good chance that you’d still make an inaccurate prediction.

But you are on the right track reading this article since the first step of every betting journey is to accumulate more knowledge and learn how the process works.

What Is Basketball Betting?

As you probably already know, basketball betting is about predicting the outcome of games and wagering money on them in hopes that you make a profit. But basketball betting isn’t as simple as picking winners and losers (although that’s part of it). Instead, it is a complex process that you can wager on many different outcomes giving you a unique way to play the odds.

The reason why bettors love basketball betting is because it is quite a versatile sport when it comes to betting.

The first and most important thing to understand before you start betting on basketball games is the types of bets you can make.

The three main types of bets are:

  1. Moneylines: You’re betting on who will win the game outright.
  2. Spreads: Betting on the margin of victory or defeat.
  3. Totals (Over/Under): Predicting the combined score of both teams.

The Moneyline: Betting on Winners

Let’s start with the easiest bet to grasp—the moneyline. You’re simply picking which team will win. That’s it. No complicated math or worrying about how much they win by. Just pick your winner and hope for the best.

How It Works

Each team is assigned odds:

  • Favorites: Represented by a negative number, like -150. This means you need to bet $150 to win $100.
  • Underdogs: Represented by a positive number, like +200. If you bet $100, you’d win $200.

Say the Boston Celtics face the Charlotte Hornets. If the Celtics are listed at -350, they’re the favorite, and you’d need to bet $350 to win $100. If the Hornets are at +350 and pull off an upset, a $100 bet would win you $350. Easy enough, right?

Just remember: favorites have safer odds but lower payouts, while underdogs are riskier with higher potential rewards.

The Spread: Leveling the Playing Field

Point spreads add a twist to basketball betting. Here, you’re betting on the margin of victory (or defeat). It’s not just about who wins but by how much—or if the underdog keeps it close.

Example

Imagine the Lakers are playing the Clippers. The spread might look like this:

  • Lakers -6.5: The Lakers need to win by at least 7 points for you to win your bet.
  • Clippers +6.5: The Clippers need to win outright or lose by 6 points or fewer.

Point spreads make even lopsided matchups exciting. Suddenly, a game where the Lakers are heavy favorites becomes a battle to see if they can “cover the spread.”

Totals (Over/Under): Root for the Score, Not the Team

If picking winners and predicting margins feels too stressful, betting on totals might be your style. Here, you’re wagering on the combined score of both teams. Oddsmakers set a number, and you decide whether the final score will be over or under that number.

A Fun Twist

Suppose the total for a game is set at 215.5 points:

  • If you bet the Over, you’re cheering for an offensive shootout.
  • If you bet the Under, you’re hoping for solid defense or missed shots galore.

Totals are great because you can enjoy the game without worrying about who wins. Just sit back and root for buckets—or the lack of them.

Tips and Strategies for Basketball Betting

Winning at basketball betting isn’t just about luck. A little strategy can go a long way:

  • Do Your Research: Study team performance, injuries, and recent trends.
  • Know the Venue: Home-court advantage matters. Did you know NBA teams win 55–60% of their home games on average? Keep that in mind.
  • Be Cautious with Spreads: Close games can make spreads risky. A team may win but not cover.
  • Follow Public Betting Trends: If everyone’s betting one side, oddsmakers might adjust the odds.

Common Questions Answered

What’s the easiest bet for beginners?

Start with moneylines. They’re straightforward and help you get comfortable with betting odds.

Do spreads only apply to basketball?

Nope! Spreads are common in football and other sports too, but they’re particularly exciting in basketball due to the high-scoring nature of the game.

How much should I bet?

Only wager what you can afford to lose. Set a budget and stick to it. Betting is supposed to be fun—not stressful.

A Quick Look at the Most Frequent Sports Injuries and How to Bounce Back Quickly

Athletes and active individuals often push their boundaries, leading to injuries. Whether playing competitive sports or engaging in recreational activities, understanding common sports injuries and effective recovery methods is essential for everyone participating in physical activity. This article will explore the frequent types of sports injuries, provide insights on rehabilitation strategies, and emphasize the importance of professional intervention for a swift return to action.

Common Types of Sports Injuries

While injuries can occur in any sport, certain types are more prevalent due to the nature of the activities involved. Sprains and strains are common, particularly in sports that require rapid movement or direction changes. Sprains, including ligaments, occur when stretched or torn, while strains refer to injuries to muscles or tendons. Another frequent injury is tendonitis, which arises from repetitive motion, leading to inflammation in the tendons.

Fractures are also a significant concern, especially in high-impact sports, where bones can break due to falls or collisions. Moreover, many athletes suffer from knee injuries such as the dreaded ACL tear. The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) plays a crucial role in stabilizing the knee; injuries in this area can take a long time to heal. Meanwhile, shoulder injuries, mainly rotator cuff tears, are rampant among baseball and swimming enthusiasts.

Ignoring these injuries can lead to chronic pain or long-lasting dysfunction, thus reinforcing the importance of injury awareness and education. Seeking help from professionals is also crucial in navigating recovery methods. If you live in Illinois, engaging in sports physical therapy in Chicago can be an effective strategy to expedite recovery. Physical therapists specialize in assessing injuries, developing tailored rehabilitation plans, and guiding athletes through recovery. They can enhance healing through targeted exercises, manual therapy, and patient education about prevention techniques.

Understanding the Causes of Sports Injuries

Injuries often arise from poor technique, inadequate warm-up, and overtraining. Athletes who do not properly warm up before engaging in strenuous activity are at a heightened risk for strains and sprains. Additionally, incorrect techniques during exercise or competition can lead to injuries, mainly if one repeatedly engages in the same motion without proper form.

Overtraining without ample recovery time can also cause fatigue, reducing strength and increasing susceptibility to injury. Athletes must train smart, which balances intensity with adequate rest. Furthermore, environmental factors play a part; wet or uneven surfaces can contribute to accidents leading to injuries. Athletes should assess not only their physical readiness but also their training environment to minimize risks.

The Importance of Initial Assessment

When an injury occurs, immediate assessment is vital. This includes understanding the extent of the injury and whether it requires emergency care or can be managed at home. An initial medical evaluation is key to determining the correct treatment path. Medical professionals often recommend imaging tests such as X-rays or MRIs to diagnose fractures or tears accurately. Early intervention can help prevent conditions from worsening, which could lead to prolonged recovery or chronic issues.

Moreover, the R.I.C.E. method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) plays a critical role in the early stages of recovery. Following these initial steps can significantly alleviate pain and swelling, creating a better environment for healing. Athletes should respond proactively to injuries rather than ignoring symptoms and hoping they will improve over time. Proper immediate care leads to a more effective rehabilitation process.

Rehabilitation Strategies After Injury

Rehabilitation is essential for recovering from sports injuries. Professionals usually tailor rehabilitation plans based on individual needs and injury types, which may include a combination of physical therapy, exercises, and modifications to activity levels. Mobility exercises often begin shortly after an injury to maintain muscles, improve circulation, and prevent stiffness. Gradually increasing intensity helps the body adapt without overexerting, ensuring a safe return to form.

Strength training becomes crucial in rehabilitation, helping restore muscle strength and prevent future injuries. Patients often engage in resistance training focused on the affected area to rebuild strength progressively. Balance and agility training can also play a significant role in recovery, particularly for athletes involved in sports that demand quick changes in direction. Working closely with a physical therapist ensures the rehabilitation plan is effective and adjusts based on progress. Communication about pain levels and any new symptoms facilitates a responsive recovery protocol. Following professional recommendations is essential; recovery is not just about returning to play but preventing re-injury in the future.

The Mental Aspect of Recovery

Recovering from a sports injury is not only a physical journey; it is equally a psychological challenge. Athletes often experience frustration or anxiety regarding their recovery timeline and potential long-term effects on their performance. Mental resilience can become crucial during this period, as negative thoughts might hinder healing and decision-making. Maintaining a positive mindset through recovery can boost motivation and encourage adherence to rehabilitation protocols.

Teammates, coaches, and professional support can encourage and reassure athletes during challenging times. Engaging in mental training and visualization can also form part of the recovery plan, helping athletes develop a positive outlook and a stronger focus on their rehabilitation goals. Grounded techniques like mindfulness and meditation can alleviate stress and foster relaxation, allowing injured athletes to manage their emotions better. Setting achievable short-term goals can instill a sense of accomplishment during recovery; celebrating these can provide motivation and reinforcement. Employing professionals in sports psychology can support athletes in navigating the mental intricacies often accompanying injuries, enhancing their resilience during this challenging time.

Return to Sport: Timing and Readiness

Determining when to return to sport is a critical question for recovering athletes. It’s essential to ensure readiness to participate fully, as rushing back can lead to further injuries. Physical therapists often utilize specialized assessments to evaluate athletes’ progress, ensuring they have regained the strength, flexibility, and functionality needed to compete. Offering functional performance tests can help gauge readiness for a return to activity. Listening to one’s body is paramount—pain should never be ignored, as it can signal underlying issues.

An athlete should feel confident in their abilities and comfortable engaging physically without hesitation. Following medical advice during this transition ensures a smoother reintegration into relevant sports activities. Open communication among doctors, physical therapists, and athletes will facilitate proper discussions regarding readiness. By adequately addressing concerns and expectations, athletes can return to performance with strategic plans prioritizing safety and efficacy.

By acknowledging the common types of sports injuries and developing effective recovery strategies, athletes can navigate their paths back to peak performance. Knowing when and how to seek professional help can significantly impact healing outcomes. Understanding preventive measures further enhances the longevity of athletic pursuits, making for a well-rounded, resilient approach to sports. Ultimately, engaging in sports is about playing smart, ensuring enjoyment, and minimizing risks.

Unsung Hero: De’Von Achane’s Consistency in an Unpredictable Season for the Dolphins

This season for the Miami Dolphins has been anything but predictable, with highs and lows that have left fans on an emotional rollercoaster. However, amidst the turbulence, there’s been one consistent performer shining through the uncertainty: De’Von Achane.

While the Dolphins have navigated through injuries, fluctuating performances from key players, and a defense that’s been hit or miss, Achane has been a beacon of reliability. His numbers might not scream headline material week in and week out, but his consistency in both rushing and receiving has been a stabilizing force for an offense searching for rhythm.

Consistent Performance Amidst Fluctuations:

Despite the team’s struggles, Achane has managed to maintain a steady output. His yards per carry, while not as explosive as his rookie year’s 7.8, have remained competitive, showing that even when the offensive line has had its challenges, Achane can still find lanes to exploit. His performance has been particularly notable in games where the Dolphins’ offense was under pressure to perform, often stepping up as a reliable option for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa when primary receivers were covered or injured.

The Receiving Game:

Achane’s growth as a receiver has been a highlight in an otherwise underwhelming season. His ability to catch passes out of the backfield or lined up wide has added a layer of unpredictability to the Dolphins’ playbook. Even when the run game faltered, Achane’s contribution through the air has been a testament to his adaptability and importance. His hands have been sure, with no drops recorded this season, a fact that underscores his reliability in clutch moments.

A Beacon of Durability:

After concerns about his durability following his rookie season, Achane has managed to stay relatively healthy, appearing in most games. This has been crucial for a team dealing with injuries across the roster. His presence on the field has been a constant, providing continuity when many things around him have changed.

The Silent Game Changer:

Perhaps the most significant aspect of Achane’s contribution this season isn’t in the statistics but in the intangible impact on team morale and strategy. His consistent performance has been a morale booster in the locker room, providing a sense of reliability in a team where expectations were sky-high but execution has been uneven.

The Quiet Impact:

While other players might have had games where they were the focal point, Achane’s steady performance has quietly shifted defenses, opening up plays for others. His ability to gain yards after contact, even in games where big plays were scarce, has been vital. He’s become the kind of player that defenses must respect, which has indirectly helped in creating more opportunities for teammates.

Looking Forward:

As the season winds down, Achane’s consistency stands out not just as a personal achievement but as a reminder of the importance of steady play in a team sport. For the Dolphins, his performance has been a silver lining, suggesting that with a few more pieces in place, the team could return to its dynamic ways. His role might not always be the most glamorous, but it’s undoubtedly pivotal, making him one of the few consistent bright spots in what has been a challenging year for Miami.

In essence, De’Von Achane has been the epitome of consistency in an inconsistent season for the Dolphins, proving that sometimes the most impactful players are those who keep showing up, game in and game out, regardless of the circumstances.

End of the Road for Catskill OTB in New York

It’s been another hugely successful year for the betting industry in New York. However, it’s not been good news for everyone. Earlier this year, Wynn Bet ceased operating in the state. The end of November saw the Catskill Regional Off-Track Betting Corporation (Catskill OTB) close down. It had been in operation for close to half a century.

The Catskill OTB gave gamblers the opportunity to place bets on horse racing. This was either online at Interbets or at some locations in Hudson Valley. November 30 was the last day when they accepted bets. That ended 48 years of running their business. It wasn’t the greatest of surprises as the company had been struggling financially for the past few years.

The pandemic didn’t help them at all. Before that took place Catskill OTB used to serve 13 counties in New York. Due to lockdowns that were imposed, their betting parlors were closed. Post pandemic they have only been taking online bets and a small number of restaurants.

The betting parlors didn’t reopen leading to financial struggles. They tried to get help from the New Jersey state legislature and considered filing for bankruptcy. Launched in 1976, Catskill OTB raised $746 million for the racing industry and New York government.

It’s been a tough few years for off-track betting in New York. The legalization of mobile sports betting has hit them hard and in October, a record $2.32 billion was wagered with online sports betting sites. That wasn’t just a record for the state of New York but the US and 14.9% higher than that recorded in October last year, reports New York Bet.

Despite the huge amounts being gambled, it hasn’t been a good year for WynnBet who on July 30 ended taking bets in the state. They had been operating in New York since February 2022 but the company has been struggling and not just in New York. They closed their operations in ten jurisdictions in the USA.

During their two-and-a-half years operating in the state, WynnBet took $233 million in bets. That only produced revenue of $11.3 million. Of the nine operators in New York (the maximum number permitted), that placed them seventh in terms of bets taken and eighth on the revenue list.

They have been replaced in New York by ESPN Bet who are owned by Penn Entertainment. Around $25 million was paid by Penn  in February 2024 for the license. That’s the same amount WynnBet paid for the license to operate in New York.

While New York’s online sports betting industry is flourishing, there is one problem that companies have to face. That’s the tax rate for online sportsbooks which at 51% is the highest in the US.

September 23 saw the New York State Gaming Commission vote in favor of transferring the license to Penn Entertainment.  It had been hoped that the approval would have been given earlier allowing an August launch in time for the start of the new NFL season.

Just a few days after approval was given, ESPN Bet was launched in New York. That saw them begin to take bets as week four of the new NFL season took place. There are three New York teams in the NFL and that produces a great deal of revenue for the state’s online sports betting industry.

The launch in New York meant that ESPN Bet is now available in 19 US states for sports betting. Five states also have their online casino.

Their first full month of operating in New York was in October with gamblers wagering $40.8 million with the new online sportsbook. That produced gross gaming revenue of $3.2 million which was a 7.84% hold.

Penn executive vice-president, chief strategy and legal officer and secretary is Chris Rogers. Speaking about the launch in New York, he said the company attracts “a different kind of bettor” and expects to “grow the market” in New York. They do not have any relationship with colleges and have no intention to market their business to those who aren’t old enough to gamble.

The arrival of ESPN Bet in the state follows the launching of the Fanatics Sportsbook in March of this year. They took over the North American assets of PointsBet in August 2023. October saw them earn a revenue figure of $12.4 million from the $178.4 million taken in wagers. That would have delighted the company as it was their best result since the launch took place.

The nine companies offering digital sports betting in New York are now:  FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars Sportsbook, BetMGM,Ballys, Resorts World, ESPN Bet, Fanatics Sportsbook and Rush Street Interactive. The most successful company is FanDuel who in October earned revenue of $77.3 million putting them ahead of DraftKings on $58.9 million.

Tkachuk Scores Twice, Bobrovsky Returns In Panthers Win Over Sharks

SUNRISE, Fla. — Matthew Tkachuk had two goals and the game winner, Sam Bennett extended his point streak to seven games and the Florida Panthers defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-1 on Saturday.

Tkachuk has scored two or more points in four straight games, tallying 13 points over that span.

“Sometimes the puck finds you, sometimes it doesn’t,” Tkachuk said when asked about his point streak. “You just gotta keep working and prepare the exact same way, which I’m doing. Got a couple fortunate bounces which is always nice.”

Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov scored on the power play, getting his eighth goal of the season and extending his point streak to six games.

The Panthers have won two straight games — and five of its last six — improving to 17-9-2 on the season. They jumped back in front of Toronto for first place in the Atlantic Division in the win.

The Sharks were outmatched against the defending Cup champs, but the blame won’t fall on goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, who had 49 saves on the night.

Sergei Bobrovsky returned to the lineup on Saturday after being away from the team for the past two games as his wife gave birth to their second child. He stopped 28 of 29 shots en route to his 12th win of the season.

“It’s a blessing to be part of, and to see how my second daughter was born,” a joyous Bobrovsky said postgame. “I [was] happy to be there with my wife. Now I’m happy to be here with my other family.”

Bobrosvky played great in the win, and he was eyeing a shut out until Tyler Toffoli played spoiler, scoring his 11th of the season with 1:25 left in the game for San Jose’s lone goal of the night.

“You’re hoping, to be nice to have a shutout for the baby girl,” Panthers head coach Paul Maurice said when asked about Bobrovsky. “He was really sharp and really on. I can only imagine that there’s a bit of freedom in his game too. That’s a lot, waiting for a new baby to arrive and then lots of joy in the net. He was great.”

Panthers News

Paul Maurice became the winningest coach in Florida Panthers history with 111 wins. It took under two and a half seasons for Maurice to reach the milestone.

“What’s the number?” Maurice asked with a smirk on his face when congratulated by a reporter. “I would say it’s not a big milestone at 111, that’s not even three 40-win seasons… I like the first part on that, I’ll take the first part. I really appreciate that.”

“I’m pleased that the team has played well for two and a half years,” Maurice added. “There will be no tattoo, I won’t be getting 111 tattooed anywhere.”

Forward Mackie Samoskevich and defenseman Uvis Balinskis returned to the lineup on Saturday, while forward Jonah Gadjovich and defenseman Adam Boqvist were scratched.

Florida won’t play again in Sunrise until Dec. 18; they’ll be on the road for the next five games as they take on their yearly western Canada road trip.

New Jersey Bill Addresses Funds in Inactive Online Gambling Accounts

Two bipartisan bills (S152 and A397) have been introduced by New Jersey lawmakers that deal with the subject of inactive online gambling accounts. What happens to money that remains unclaimed from such accounts? If the bill becomes law, then the funds could head in the direction of New Jersey’s unclaimed property program.

This would be the case but not until after a three year period has elapsed. The legislation has been introduced by Assemblymen Robert Auth and Joe Danielson. It has also received additional sponsorship from Assemblymen John DiMaio and Sean Kean.

It has been introduced at a time when the online gambling industry in New Jersey continues to grow.  However, the question is what happens to the funds that are in  accounts that remain unused for long periods of time.

It may well be that the account holder has decided to cease gambling. More likely, they have decided to join another online site but perhaps forgotten that they still have another account that still has some funds remaining in it.

The bill doesn’t want to see these unused funds simply remain there. Instead, they’d be reclassified as unclaimed property and that would bring the ‘Uniform Unclaimed Property Act’ into play.

If the new bill were to become law, online gaming operators in New Jersey would have to make an attempt to resolve the situation regarding inactive accounts. This would entail them having to try and contact those who have either inactive or self-excluded accounts.

Either an email, phone call or letter would have to be sent. This would encourage them to withdraw the amount that remains in their account. If it is not possible to contact the users or they decide not to take any action, the funds in their accounts would after three years of inactivity then be transferred to New Jersey’s unclaimed property program.

At present, funds in inactive accounts are split between the New Jersey Casino Control Fund and the online operator. This would change and the operator would not be able to claim half of the funds.

By doing this, the funds will be accessible and safeguarded in a centralized state system. Accountability will be enhanced and those who may have forgotten about funds in their accounts have an improved chance of retrieving their money.

Whether the bill will become law remains to be seen. It is also likely that during legislative discussions of its contents, there may be amendments or additional provisions made.

This is not the first time that the subject of unclaimed balances of online gambling accounts has been discussed. 2022 saw the issue discussed and both of the current bills were introduced in January of this year and discussed by the committees in the Senate and Assembly. However, neither were ever voted on.

With online sports betting and casino gaming now reaching record levels, interest in the subject has been revitalised. It also has the aim of increasing the overall responsibility of online operators to try as hard as they can to ensure the rightful owners receive their lost funds.

No votes have been scheduled for either of the two bills. If sufficient support for them is received, then hearings and possibly voting could take place in early 2025.

It’s been a massive year for the online sports betting industry in New Jersey. Total handle in the state has already gone through the $10 billion mark. Over $56 billion worth of bets have been taken since online sports betting was made legal in New Jersey six years ago following a US Supreme Court Judge ruling.

Revenue for the first ten months of this year was $193 million which is 13.9% higher than for the same period last year. The final two months of the year are expected to be very busy and then the start of the new year will be the countdown to the Super Bowl.

October saw the revenue earned by online casinos in New Jersey beat that recorded by land-based casinos in Atlantic City. The figure for online casinos was $213.6 million, just ahead of the $208.7 million recorded by the Atlantic City casinos.

Online casinos saw a growth in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic. That caused land-based casinos to be temporarily closed. Since the pandemic ended, revenue figures for Atlantic City’s casinos have gradually been increasing.

However, for the first ten months of 2024, brick-and-mortar casino revenue has fallen by 1.6%. That’s compared to an increase of nearly 8% for online casinos that continue to be hugely popular with players.

How to improve your business cash flow in 5 easy steps

A stable cash flow is essential for the success of any business. Without proper cash flow management, even a thriving business can face financial difficulty. Fortunately, improving it is not a complicated process and a few simple steps can help you optimize your cash flow.

But before we get into those strategies, let’s look at what cash flow means

Cash flow is the movement of money in and out of a business over a given period of time. It shows how well the company is managing its financial resources and whether it has enough money to cover expenses, pay down debt and invest in growth.

Now that we’ve established this, here’s how you can optimize it in 5 essential steps:

Constantly monitor cash flow

The first essential step is to know exactly how money is moving through your business. Without constant monitoring, you can end up missing out on unpaid invoices, late payments or other expenses that affect your cash flow. Use specialized accounting software or apps to track every cash inflow and outflow. It’s important to have a clear picture of your financial situation at all times.

Helpful hint: Make weekly or monthly reports that allow you to see cash flow trends and prevent financial problems before they occur.

Optimize payment terms with suppliers and customers

One of the most common causes of cash flow problems is a lack of good payment term management. Talk to your suppliers to get more favourable terms, such as extended payment terms, but also to your customers to ask for faster payment.

Also, set clear policies for collecting payments from customers. Offer discounts for prompt payments or impose penalties for late payments. In this way, you will encourage prompt payment and reduce the risk of delays that can negatively affect cash flow.

Reduce unnecessary expenses

To improve your cash flow, you should carefully analyze your expenses and eliminate any costs that are not essential to running your business. Review all your expenses, from rent and utilities to purchases of raw materials or external services, and see where you can cut back without affecting the quality of the products or services you offer.

For example: If you have lots of monthly subscriptions to services you never use, it’s time to cancel them. If you have purchased equipment that sits unused, it might be better to sell or rent it.

Increase revenue by diversifying your offer

Another great way to improve your cash flow is to diversify your product or service offering. By looking for new sources of income, you’ll be able to offset any fluctuations in revenue during down periods.

How can you do this? Analyze your market and your customers to discover unmet needs or complementary solutions you could offer. This could be add-on products, additional services or package deals that encourage customers to spend more.

Access lines of credit to ensure liquidity

If you find your business in a period of financial stress, you can access lines of credit or loans to ensure the cash flow needed for day-to-day operations. Even if you don’t need cash right away, having quick access to credit can help maintain a steady cash flow.

Important: Use credit lines with caution to avoid debt traps that can affect the future of your business. Choose an amount of credit that matches your financial realities and pay attention to interest rates and loan terms.

So improving the cash flow of your business does not require complicated measures, but it does require careful and continuous management.

Eight Panthers Named to 4 Nations Face-Off Rosters

The official rosters for the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off have been released and eight Florida Panthers players had their name called for national duty.

Prior to Wednesday’s full squad announcements, the Panthers knew the three of their guys were locked in for the tournament, with Aleksander Barkov (Finland), Matthew Tkachuk (USA) and Gustav Forsling (Sweden) all being part of their respective countries first six named players.

When the four participating nations: Finland, Sweden, USA and Canada, unveiled their full rosters on Wednesday, five more Panthers were selected.

Finland loaded up its roster with Panthers, taking all four of Florida’s, selecting forwards Anton Lundell and, Eetu Luostarinen and defenseman Niko Mikkola. The three will join their captain, Barkov, next February in Montreal and Boston.

Panthers assistant coach Tuomo Ruutu, who won two Olympic Bronze medals as a player with Finland in 2010 and 2014, will be on the Finnish staff as an assistant coach.

Besides the four Panthers who won the Stanley Cup last year, the Finnish roster will be filled with championship pedigree. They’ll have recent champions like Miko Rantanen and, Artturi Lehkonen from Colorado’s 2022 Cup team and Teuvo Teravinen, who won in 2015 with Chicago.

“It’s big value,” said Finland general manager Jere Lehtinen. “You have a few [players] who won and have been in tough situations through their career, so when you come to a tournament like that, it’s a quick tournament. You have to be ready right away.”

Hockey Canada was the one federation that did not take any Panthers in June when they announced its first six players. They did end up selecting two Panthers for the final team.

Canada took forwards Sam Reinhart and Sam Bennett as they rounded out a team filled with numerous Cup champions and future Hall of Famers.

Reinhart had a 57 goal season last year and capped it off with the Stanley Cup winning goal in Game 7. Coming off a career year, there’s been no slump for Reinhart as he currently leads the NHL with 18 goals.

While Reinhart was a shoo-in to make Team Canada, Bennett wasn’t. The gritty 200-foot player’s playoff pedigree certainly played a factor in his selection and with his hot start to the season (13 goals, 24 points in 25 games), he made it hard for Canada to pass up on him.

Forsling (Sweden) and Tkachuk (USA) remained the lone Panthers on their respective teams, however both nations will have some representation away from the ice.

Sweden named former player and, current Panthers scout and development consultant Patric Hornqvist as an assistant general manager. They also brought on Panthers assistant coach Myles Fee as a video coach.

Panthers GM Bill Zito will be an assistant general manager for the Americans and Panthers Head Equipment Manager Teddy Richards will serve as an equipment manager.
