Ryan Lomberg Scores Winner in Panthers 4-2 Victory Over Capitals

SUNRISE — After dropping their first game out of the All-Star break on Tuesday night, the Florida Panthers got back in the win column on Thursday, defeating the Washington Capitals 4-2.

 

Ryan Lomberg scored the game winning goal late in the third period and Matthew Tkachuk had three points in the Panthers’ victory. 

 

Florida has won five of their last six games — improving to 32-15-4 with the win. 

 

Here’s Thursday’s takeaways. 

 

Reinhart chasing 40

The race to 40 is nearing its end for Sam Reinhart.

 

Entering Thursday’s matchup against the Capitals, Reinhart’s 37 goals was second most in the NHL.

 

Reinhart became one goal closer to the illustrious 40 in a season Thursday night.

 

With the Panthers on the power play late in the second, Reinhart tied the game with 2:28 left in the period for his 38th of the season. His previous career high was 33 (2021-2022).

 

Reinhart leads the NHL in power play goals with 21. 


If Florida needs a goal, or a boost this season — as they did tonight — Reinhart is usually there. But when asked about the offensive contributions post-game, head coach Paul Maurice highlighted Reinhart’s ability to play a 200-foot game. 

 

“If he doesn’t score for four games, it’s going to be very well played defensively. He’s not going to cheat for it,” Maurice said. “I think he’s had such a wonderful start… he’s just been a great player for us whether he scores or not and he’s earned everything that he’s gotten this year.”

 

Another multi-point game for Tkachuk

Matthew Tkachuk has been one of the biggest contributors to the Panthers offense in 2024 — picking up 24 points in his last 14 games before Thursday’s game against the Capitals. 

 

Once again, Tkachuk was all over the score sheet on Thursday, picking up three assists en route to the Panthers 4-2 win. 

 

“I thought the way we played in the second period and in the third, it’s got to be a staple for us and we’ve done it for big chunks of the season,” Tkachuk said. “We got away from it the last little bit at home. It felt good to get back.” 

 

Tkachuk has 27 points since Jan 2. (15 games) — seven of those being multi-point nights. He’s now scored at least two points in a game 15 times this season. 

 

He is second on the team in scoring with 54 points in 51 games (Reinhart is first with 63 points).

 

Ryan Lomberg calls game 

Tied 2-2 with just over five minutes left in regulation, Florida’s depth line forwards led them to victory,

 

Paul Maurice entrusted his fourth-line to play bruiser against Washington’s top-line at times during the third period on Thursday.

 

Being a thorn in the Capitals’ backs was one job for Ryan Lomberg and co. but so was getting the winning goal. 

 

With 5:32 left in the third, Lomberg roofed a shot top shelf past Darcy Kuemper to put the Panthers up 3-2. This was just his third goal of the season — with his last coming 35 games before in Nov. 14 against San Jose. 

 

“The most important thing for us is that we win the hockey game,” Lomberg said. “I think if we’re not scoring and we’re not winning then it’s time to look in the mirror. But we’ve been doing a good job of winning games.” 

 

Lomberg continued. “It’s obviously good to contribute,” when speaking about his eventual game winning goal. 

 

The fourth-line also drew two penalties on Thursday, one of which led to Reinhart’s game-tying power play goal. 

Skyforce need to solve their defensive issues

The Skyforce still has the best record in the G League, currently sitting at 12-4. When having the best record in the league it can be hard to be disappointed, but that is the feeling when I think about the Skyforce’s recent play. Since starting the regular season 9-0, they are now 3-4 in their last 7 games and have been showing more weakness. Yes, they have been trying to integrate fresh players and figure out a new rotation, but that does not excuse some of the issues we see on the court.

I previously mentioned that to get back on track the Skyforce needs to tighten up their defense, this simply has not been the case. They have gotten worse. The Skyforce have let up 125.2 points per game in their last 5 games. That is simply unacceptable and there have been a couple of reasons for this. The biggest thing that stands out is the lack of personal passion in playing defense. Too many times guys are not putting in the extra effort needed to get stops. It is not uncommon to see players disengaged on the defensive end and looking like they don’t care.

There have been several instances of lazy defense being played. There have been many halfhearted “steal” attempts and throwing out their hands for “help” defense. The only way to fix this is to have personal pride in your match-up. It should hurt when someone scores on you, it should make you upset. Now I understand that defense isn’t sexy and doesn’t get fans as excited, but it is necessary to consistently win basketball games. If the Skyforce wants to get back to their dominant play, it has to start on the defensive end.

They can’t expect to just “out-talent” other teams. They have to earn each win, and recently they haven’t done the necessary things to get the wins. I asked Jamaree Bouyea about what he feels the team can do to turn this around and he stated, “I think we have a great group of talent and if we just take it day by day and game by game, we will get back to being ourselves as a team.” They need to take it game by game like Bouyea said, each game is important. They cannot get caught up in their record. This team truly has a chance to do something special, if they want to get back to championship form, they need to turn it up on the defensive end. 

Jamaree Bouyea

The Skyforce has been more fluid on offense recently. I feel a large reason for this is players sacrificing aspects of their game for the betterment of the team. The person who sticks out the most in this regard is Jamaree Bouyea. I previously wrote about how his role has changed to be more of a facilitator and how he is not having the number of shots he is used to, and this is still true. I was able to ask him about his thoughts on it and he said, “My role is a bit different than last year for sure, but I still think I have to find ways to contribute as much as possible. Overall, finding ways to score, make plays for others, and defending is what I take pride in and try to do on a nightly basis.” I love this answer because it shows that he understands that his game has to continue to adapt to best fit the team. The Skyforce have an abundance of scoring talent, but what they lack, at times, is a guy to set up easy baskets. Bouyea has taken on that role and has flourished. As for an NBA call-up, like I’ve been saying he deserves, Bouyea has the perfect attitude “All I can say is that I’ll continue to play the right way and play to win. Opportunities will come when they are supposed to.” 

RJ Hampton

RJ Hampton looks to have found his footing with the Skyforce. The past two games have been Hampton’s best games of the year. He’s finished with stat lines of 27/6/8 and 18/7/6 respectively. He has been attacking the basket more and having more energy when he plays. He looks much more comfortable and seems to understand his role better. His efficiency has spiked because of this. Hampton needs to continue to play to his strengths and rely on them more. Overall, a promising stretch for Hampton, the Skyforce have to be thrilled with his recent play. 

Malik Williams 

I have been impressed by Malik Williams in recent games. He has been a good stretch 5 and a weapon for the Skyforce. Through 16 regular season games, Williams is averaging 10.7 points and 7.2 rebounds on 49.6% from the field and 45% from three. He has made the most of every opportunity he has received and has become an important part of the team. There is not a game that goes by, that Williams’s impact is not felt. He has improved as the season has progressed and is playing his best basketball as of late. If he continues at this level of play, then he could receive NBA interest.

The Panthers have won four-straight games and improved to a franchise best eight consecutive road wins following Saturday night’s contest. 

 

Panthers backup goaltender Anthony Stolarz had 21 saves in his eighth win of the season .

 

“I just want to be someone the team can count on when my name is called,” Stolarz said post game. “I’ll be  able to go out there and give an honest effort.”

 

Florida enters the All-Star break second in the Eastern Conference with a 31-14-4 record.

Sam Reinhart scores again, sets Panthers power play record 

It’s pretty much a nightly occurrence to see Sam Reinhart’s name in the scoresheet. 

 

The Panthers’ leading scorer has already broken numerous career accolades this season and on 

 

Reinhart kept his name near the top of the NHL leaderboards on Saturday, scoring his 37th goal of the season 7:56 into the second period. 

 

On what was his 20th power-play goal of the season, Reinhart moved into sole possession of the Panthers’ single season power-play goal record. He tied the record the previous night in Pittsburgh. 

 

“It’s been pretty fun,” Reinhart said when asked about his recent play. “Our power play came up really big tonight. Back-to-back [games], not much jump, that’s an important couple of goals to get. ”

 

Reinhart also extended his point streak to 13 games — moving him into a tie for second-longest in Panthers history. 

 

He has 62 points in 49 games. 

 

Special teams victory leads to another win

Just one night after killing off seven consecutive penalties en route to a shootout victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Panthers special teams play led them to victory again. 

 

The Panthers went 2/4 on the power play Saturday night and were a perfect 1/1 on the penalty kill. 

 

Florida’s PK is 14/16 in their last three games. 

 

Over the four-game win streak, the Panthers have scored at least once on the power play.

 

Matthew Tkachuk another multi-point night 

While Sam Reinhart has been on a heater all season, Matthew Tkachuk hasn’t been too far off his teammate in 2024. 

 

Tkachuk had two-points against the Islanders for his 14th multi-point game of the season and sixth in the month of January  

 

Tkachuk scored his 16th goal of the season 5:59 into the third to put the Panthers up 2-1. 

 

He also picked up the primary assist on Reinhart’s goal in the second period. 

 

Tkachuk has 51 points in 49 games — 24 of those coming in January (13 goals, 11 assists).

SUNRISE — In their last home game before the All-Star break, the Florida Panthers left their mark at Amerant Bank Arena, defeating the Arizona Coyotes 6-2. 

 

The Panthers also got back the much needed services of their captain Aleksander Barkov after he missed the past three games with injury. Their top-line defesneman Gustav Forsling also returned after missing the last game due to the birth of his child.

The Florida Panthers are playing hockey. 

 

What does that mean?

 

Sam Reinhart probably scored.

 

Florida’s leading scorer was at it again on Wednesday — both scoring goals and setting them up.

 

Just one game after setting a new career-high for goals in a season, Reinhart added to that number, scoring his 35th goal of the season 8:44 into the game on the power play. 

 

The goal was Reinhart’s 18th of the season on the powerplay –tying him with Oli Jokinen (07-08) for third all-time in Panthers’ single season power play goals. 

 

Reinhart finished the night with two points — his 19th multi-point game of the season. He also extended his point streak to 11 games.

 

His offensive production is one of the most consistent things the Panthers have had this season and as Matthew Tkachuk put it post game, “that’s pretty much every night,” when speaking about Reinhart’s contributions. 

 

First Panther goal, not first Panther fight for Jonah Gadjovich 

Fans who arrived at the game on time were in for a couple rounds of old-time hockey.

 

These two teams had a little bit of bad blood brewing from their Jan. 2 meeting in Arizona. In that game, Nick Cousins hit Juuso Valiamaki in a vulnerable position. As a result, Jason Zucker got Cousins back with a hit from behind — which has kept Cousins out of the lineup since with a concussion. Zucker received a three-game suspension for the hit.

 

In warmups, a few players on each side were having a chat at the faceoff circle. As for what was said in that conversation , there were  “a lot of not nice words that I probably shouldn’t repeat,” according to Jonah Gadjovich.  

 

When the game started, Ryan Lomberg immediately dropped the gloves with Jack McBain off the draw. On the next faceoff, Gadjovich would fight Liam O’Brien. 

 

Seven seconds into the game,  there was no passing, no scoring, but there were two. 

 

The crowd in Sunrise loved when the guys dropped the gloves — giving them a round off applause on their way back to the bench — but Gadjovich’s night wasn’t done there.

 

Gadjovich would score his first goal as a Panther off a slick forehand-backhand move, extending Florida’s lead to 6-0.

 

“Honestly I was pretty happy,” Gadjovich said. “A little bit of monkey off the back there, but I just try to contribute any way I can. Tonight was nice to get a goal.”

 

Panthers snap home losing-streak 

When Florida hit the road for Monday night’s game in Nashville they were riding a four-game losing streak — all of which came at home.  

 

The Panthers were able to get out of their losing skid with a comfortable win against the Predators, but they still had one funk to break out of — losing at home. 

 

In what was their last home game before the NHL All-Star break, it would be the final time Florida could play in front of their home fans until Feb. 6.

 

The fans in Sunrise left Wednesday night’s game happy customers after the dominating performance their team put on. 

 

Between the two fights off the draw, six goals and 31 saves from Sergei Bobrovsky, the Panthers shook off their previous four home losses with three very good periods of hockey.

 

Florida has two more games before the All-Star break. Jan. 26 against the Penguins and Jan. 27 against the Islanders.

Skyforce finally start to stumble some

After starting the G League regular season 9-0, the Sioux Falls Skyforce have now dropped 2 of their last three. The Skyforce still leads the Western Conference with 10 wins but has dropped to 2nd in win percentage. Let’s dive into some takeaways and player notes. 

The Skyforce recently played two close games against the Maine Celtics splitting the series 1-1. These were 2 of the toughest games the Skyforce have played all year and were a good learning experience. I asked Coach Powell about what the Celtics do specifically that makes them a tough team to play, and he said, “They are a very talented team and have a good mixture of young guys and vets. They are well-coached and play hard. They have all the elements to make a good team at any level.” This was clear as the Celtics were not lacking any firepower to keep up with a talented Skyforce team. Typically, you see the Skyforce pull away quickly from teams due to the sheer talent on the roster, but the Celtics were able to go blow for blow and even carried a 4-point lead at the end of the 3rd quarter in both matchups. One of the players who gave them trouble was Drew Peterson, who was on the Skyforce during the Showcase Cup part of the season. In the 2nd matchup, Peterson was simply on fire and finished with a career-high of 30 points.

I asked Coach Powell about what makes Peterson special, and he said “He is a versatile player. He can shoot from outside, has length, and can shoot from midrange. He is a confident player and got it going. The rim probably looked huge to him, it was not surprising what he did today, we know he can do it.” Peterson was showing his versatility, especially in his scoring. He was hitting threes as well as getting open looks in the midrange and at the rim. He consistently makes the right plays. Coach Powell also added a laugh and said, “I wish he didn’t have to do it to us.” That we can all agree on. 

For the Skyforce to get back on track I believe they need to tighten up the defense and find more chemistry. In their two losses, they gave up 129 and 131 points, respectively. There has been a lack of resistance to drivers and there have been too many ill-advised steal attempts. They need better discipline to know when it is okay to gamble. There were several instances of a failed steal attempt leaving the defense vulnerable. This was something they had balanced perfectly during their hot start, but now they are slipping into unhealthy habits.

On the offensive end, they need to continue to find ways to mesh. This team has an abundance of talent, numerous guys could be on an NBA roster right now. So much talent on one team can make it difficult to figure out who is the go-to guy and how to distribute shots. Though, I bet they will figure it out and get back on another long winning streak. Their next game is on January 30th against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, who are currently 1st in the Western Conference. 

 

Josh Christopher 

The Skyforce added to a stacked roster and picked up Josh Christopher. He is a former 1st round pick in the NBA Draft and played 2 years in the NBA. Skyforce fans might remember Christopher because on January 7th he lit up the Skyforce for 34 points. Having so much talent on one team can sometimes be challenging but Christopher is not worried about the chemistry saying that they “just need time” and he is “willing to sacrifice and adapt. To help the team.” For him personally, he is coming from the Salt Lake City Stars where he primarily had the ball in his hands, now he is taking on a completely different role. He is playing more off-ball and is not getting the same usage as he was on the Stars. I asked him how this adjustment would be, and he said “Playing in the flow of the game is something I have done all my life. With the Stars, I had the opportunity to be a PG and have the ball in my hands more. With the Skyforce I will go back to playing in the flow like I have done all my life.” This is clear as he is shooting 52% from the field in his three games with the Skyforce and it looks like he has been with the team all year. As for what the fans can look forward to the most about Christopher joining the team, “Fans can look forward to me being a workhorse. I can be an electric player and I will bring a hard-nosed mentality to the team.” 

 

Jamaree Bouyea

Bouyea is a Skyforce fan favorite and for good reason. Last year in his rookie year he was All-NBA G League 2nd team and NBA G League All-Rookie team. Bouyea has backed this up with another good season and is currently averaging 14.7/5.5/6.6 on 47% shooting and 39% from three. He is also doing work on the defensive end averaging 2.1 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. Bouyea is the definition of an all-around player. There is not a thing on the Basketball court that he can’t do. Though he can do it all Bouyea excels at getting to the basket with his quickness. This not only gives him easy opportunities at the rim but also helps set up his teammates for easy buckets. His ability to blow by defenders makes the defense play back opening up good looks from three as well. With the addition of Christopher, Bouyea’s role has changed a little bit. He has had to sacrifice some of his shots and become more of a facilitator. He has excelled in this role and has been dominating games by controlling the flow of the offense. Bouyea has consistently broken down his defender and then dumped the ball off to a cutting teammate or has kicked the ball out for a wide-open three. Sometimes looking at the state sheet doesn’t tell the whole story about Bouyea, you need to watch the games to see all that he does. I’ll continue to say it, Jamaree Bouyea deserves to be on an NBA roster. It’s criminal he isn’t on one already.

Panthers PK Gives up Five Goals in Loss to Wild

SUNRISE — Despite conceding five times on the penalty kill, the Florida Panthers kept themselves in Friday night’s game until the final seconds before falling 6-4 to the Minnesota Wild. 

 

Florida has dropped their past four games — all of which were at home — sliding to 27-14-4 on the season.

 

“Losing four in a row is tough,” Aaron Ekblad said. “Holding ourselves accountable to the hard, tough, strong, resilient, responsible game is important. We’re going to have to get back to scoring the first goal, taking care of leads, not taking penalties.”

 

Minnesota scored their first five goals of the game on the power play. It wasn’t until 11.8 seconds remaining in the game where they’d score their only non special team’s goal, by way of a Ryan Hartman empty netter. 

 

The Wild were 5/6 on the man-advantage while the Panthers went 0/4. This was the first time all season where the Panthers conceded more than twice on the penalty kill. 

 

Kirill Kaprizov and Ryan Hartman scored twice for the Wild. Joel Eriksson Ek, and Mats Zuccarello also scored. The Wild’s power play success had them up 5-2 early in the third period. 

 

After going down 5-2, Anton Lundell and Gustav Forsling scored 17 seconds apart to make it a one-goal game with just under 12 minutes to go in regulation.  Eetu Luostarinen and Aaron Ekblad scored the other two Panthers goals. Ekblad tied his career-high with four-points in the game. 

 

“Lundell was good… I liked Aaron Ekblad getting up the ice. Four-point night for him is real good,” coach Paul Maurice said. “After that we won’t be bragging about this one. This was a tough one for us.”

 

Lundell’s goal was his first since Nov. 22 on Friday. He had two points on the night, his first multi-point night since Dec. 8.

 

“I feel like we gave everything in the third. It wasn’t enough,” Lundell said. “We gave them too much in the start and today was too hard to get it back.”

 

The Panthers had 19 shots in the final period. 15 of Minnesota’s 26 shots came on the power play.

 

After cutting the deficit to one, the Panthers were pushing the Wild all period — controlling plenty of o-zone time with the goaltender pulled.

 

Filip Gustavsson made a few big saves down the stretch to keep the Wild ahead and Ryan Hartman iced off the game with an empty netter.

 

Game Notes

The Panthers were without captain Aleksander Barkov (lower-body) for a second consecutive game. 

 

Will Lockwood left the game in the first period and did not return after getting knocked down in a fight with Wild forward Brandon Duhaime.  Maurice said an update on Lockwood would be provided on Saturday.

 

Both starting goalies left the game Friday night. The Panthers pulled Sergei Bobrovsky after he conceded his fourth goal of the night. Anthony Stolarz took over the crease. 

 

Wild goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury pulled himself from the game the same time Bobrovksy left. Filip Gustavsson took over the net for Minnesota.
