The Evolution of Award Ceremonies and Trophies

In the grand tapestry of human achievement, one thread weaves consistently: our innate desire for recognition and celebration. Historically, award ceremonies and the trophies they confer have played a pivotal role in satisfying this desire. But how did these traditions originate, and how have they evolved over time?

A Glimpse Into Ancient Recognitions

The practice of acknowledging accomplishment dates back to ancient civilizations. For instance, in ancient Greece, victors in the prestigious Olympic Games were awarded laurel wreaths. These weren’t merely decorative; they were symbolic of excellence and victory. While these rewards were perishable, the legacy they cemented was eternal.

The Birth of Material Trophies

Over time, societies began to recognize the value of a more enduring symbol of accomplishment. Enter the trophy. The term “trophy” was inspired by the Greek word “tropaion,” which referred to war memorials from weapons of defeated enemies. These trophies served as a tangible reminder of battles won and territories conquered.

From Battles to Ballrooms: The Diversification of Trophies

While initially associated with warfare, trophies soon found their way into various spheres of society. Art, literature, and sporting events began to integrate award ceremonies. Speaking of sports, the arena has seen a monumental shift in how achievements are celebrated. Today, when you think of sports and awards, what comes to mind? Perhaps a glitzy ceremony with celebrities walking the red carpet, or the thrill of wagering on your favorite nominee on platforms like casino site Conquestador? The intersection of entertainment, sports, and awards has become an industry in its own right, with numerous stakeholder interests.

Modern Day Award Ceremonies: More than Just a Trophy

Fast forward to today, and award ceremonies have taken on a life of their own. They’re not just events where individuals or teams receive trophies. They’ve evolved into extravagant showcases, often broadcasted globally, where nominees hope to win not only for personal satisfaction but for the potential surge in their career trajectory.

Isn’t it fascinating how the very nature of these ceremonies has transformed? What once was a quiet acknowledgment of a job well done now can catapult someone into stardom.

The Digital Age: Virtual Ceremonies and Beyond

As with many things in our ever-evolving world, technology has left its mark on award ceremonies. The rise of the digital age means ceremonies can be conducted virtually. It also means that trophies aren’t just physical objects anymore. Digital badges, online certifications, and even social media accolades have become the trophies of the 21st century.

Conclusion

Looking back, one can’t help but marvel at the evolution of award ceremonies and trophies. From laurel wreaths in ancient Greece to global broadcasts with millions of viewers, the essence remains the same – to honor and celebrate human achievement.

But what does the future hold? As technology continues to advance, will we see further diversification in how we recognize accomplishments? Perhaps a day when virtual reality ceremonies become the norm? Or when trophies have AI integrated into them?

One thing’s for certain: our desire for acknowledgment and celebration isn’t going anywhere. Award ceremonies and trophies, in whatever form they take, will continue to be a testament to that timeless human spirit. After all, isn’t it heartwarming to know that as a species, we’ve always found ways to lift each other up and celebrate our collective journey?

So, the next time you’re watching an award ceremony or admiring a trophy, take a moment to reflect on its rich history. And maybe, just maybe, place a bet on your favorite nominee. After all, the future is as unpredictable as it is exciting!

Sam Reinhart scores OT winner in Panthers 4-3 win over Capitals

For a second straight game, the Florida Panthers put together a third period comeback, defeating the Washington Capitals 4-3 in overtime at Capital One Arena.

Sam Reinhart’s overtime winner wrapped up Florida’s short one-game road trip with two points as the team improved to 7-4-1 on the season.

Here’s tonight’s takeaways.

Ekman-Larsson scores his third goal of the season — surpasses previous season’s high

Last season in Vancouver, Oliver Ekman-Larsson had just 2 goals in 54 games with the Canucks before he was shut down for the year due to an injury he picked up back in February.

Wednesday night against Washington, Ekman-Larsson scored his third goal of the year, already surpassing his goal total from season in 42 fewer games.

Still without top defensemen Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour, Ekman-Larsson has been heavily relied on by head coach Paul Mauirce early on into the season.

Ekman-Larsson plays on the Panthers’ top defensive-pair, alongside fellow Swede Gustav Forsling. The duo leads the team in total ice-time, with Forsling averaging 24:17 a game, and Ekman-Larsson just under that at 23:58.

Florida’s second period play hurts them again

Entering Wednesday’s game, statistically Florida’s worst period of the season has been the second, and it wasn’t really close.

Through 11 games, the Panthers had a -5 goal differential in the second period — which was significantly worse than periods one and three — both of which were +2. Not much changed against the Capitals.

Heading into the second period, Florida led Washington 2-1. Yet, when the  second intermission came around, the Panthers trailed 3-2.

Washington tied the game 6:13 into the period off a short-handed goal from Connor McMichael. They then took the lead with over four minutes before overtime after Anthony Mantha scored his second goal of the night.

The Panthers would not score in the period, as their goal differential in the second regressed to -7 on the season.

Reinhart, Barkov, Rodrgiues continue to rack up points

Two of the best Panthers forwards this season have been Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhart.

For Reinhart, he leads the team in both goals and points (9 goals, 16 points). Barkov is second on the team in points (12 points in 11 games). Both players are a +9.

Paul Maurice has liked Barkov and Reinhart together on the top-line this season, and they have shown that it’s working.

“They’re driving the offensive game for us right now,” Maurice said about Barkov and Reinhart. “We know that we are a little challenged offensively, but those guys certainly aren’t.”

The third member of that top-line hasn’t been a slouch either. In his first season with the Panthers, Evan Rodrigues has been a fairly consistent contributor offensively so far, sitting fourth in team scoring with 10 points in 12 games. Rodrigues also leads the Panthers in plus/minus at +10.

“I think we’ve done a lot of good things, we’ve had some great starts in games, we’ve had some comeback wins,” Rodrigues said when asked about the team’s resilience.  “We know that ability’s there, now I think it’s just continuing to do the small things over and over again… there’s definitely no quit in this team.”

Tonight, Reinhart, Barkov and Rodrigues all picked up a goal and an assist respectively en route to the Panthers seventh win of the season.

Another OT, another win

After needing a third period comeback to force overtime Monday night against Columbus, the Panthers were in the same situation Wednesday night, trailing 3-2 in the third period.

Florida’s Evan Rodrigues tied the game 3:33 into the third, and- that would be the only goal either team would score in the final period of regulation.

Both sides grabbed a point as overtime was on the schedule in the nation’s capital.

The extra period of hockey did not last long in Washington, D.C.

Just 15 seconds into overtime, Sam Reinhart put away his team-high ninth goal of the season to send the Panthers home with the extra point.

“Those are the type of points that are huge at this time of year that pay off later,” Reinhart said postgame. “We know how big it is to come out of the gates and start banking some points early in the year.”

Aleksander Barkov picked up the primary assist on Reinhart’s goal, while Evan Rodrigues got the secondary assist.

Week 10 NFL Power Rankings: Chiefs push Dolphins aside

It is Week 10 which means we have officially reached the midway point of the NFL season.

Injuries continue to become a major problem for some teams which means that players are forced to step up in their new roles or even on their new teams. And man, was that shown on full display for a Minnesota Vikings squad that has been severely hit by the injury bug.

After Kirk Cousins suffered a season-ending injury in Minnesota’s last game, the Vikings were forced to look for a new quarterback. They traded for Joshua Dobbs from the Cardinals right before the trade deadline to help add depth to their quarterback room.

Jaren Hall got the start at quarterback for the Vikings against the Falcons and after just eight offensive drop backs, Hall got injured.

So, in came Dobbs and it looked like he fit perfectly in their offense.

Dobbs completed 20 of his 30 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 66 yards and had a rushing touchdown in Minnesota’s 31-28 win against Atlanta. Who would have thought that Dobbs would be the savior for the Minnesota Vikings.

In Houston, C.J. Stroud put on a show and it looks like he’s secured the NFL’s Rookie of the Year award.

Stroud was slinging it around Tampa Bay’s defense as he set a rookie passing total record, throwing for 470 yards and five touchdowns.

Houston won 39-37 against the Buccaneers in a shootout.

The Raiders look like they’re having fun after firing their head coach Josh McDaniels. Las Vegas blew out the Giants at home and set their largest point total of the season, winning 30-6.

The Ravens look scary and are legitimate contenders in the AFC. They blew out a solid Seahawks team at home 37-3 with most of their production coming on the ground.

Running back Keaton Mitchell was a surprise as he had nine carries for 138 yards and a touchdown.

Every team in the AFC East lost in Week 9.

The Patriots continue to struggle as they lost a home matchup against the Commanders, the Jets’ offensive woes are really holding them back as they lost against the Chargers 27-6, the Bills have lost three out of their last five games and the Dolphins lost in Germany against the Chiefs after not being able to get anything going during the first half.

Miami was able to make it close at the end but it was too little too late. The Chiefs defense stopped the Dolphins on a potential game-tying drive and Kansas City won 21-14.

The good news is that Miami is still first in the AFC East. The bad news is that the narrative that’s quickly surrounding this team is if they can win against good opponents. Miami has not beaten a team over .500 this season but it’s also worth taking into account that the teams they’ve lost to have all been on the road. Miami has some work to do during their bye week this week.

Takeaways from Panthers 5-4 overtime win over Blue Jackets

SUNRISE —  The Florida Panthers were able to save themselves after squandering away a three-goal lead on Monday night — mounting a comeback in the last minute of the game to defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4 in overtime at Amerant Bank Arena.

Here are tonight’s takeaways from an eventful game in Sunrise.

Florida leapt out of the gates on the frontfoot

Puck drop on Monday night was just after 7 p.m. local time in Sunrise. The Panthers definitely got the memo of what time the game started.

Florida had the ice tilted in their favor for nearly all of the first period. Within the first 6:09 of the game, Florida had already gone up 3-0 on Columbus.

Ryan Lomberg opened the scoring just 2:19 into the game — picking up his first goal of the season from below the goal line.

Less than a minute after Lomberg got the Panthers on the board, Gustav Forsling’s slapshot from the point would get past Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins. — giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

Aleksander Barkov would wrap up the Panthers trifecta at the 6:09 mark of the first period. Before some were in their seats, Florida led 3-0.

The Panthers would chase Merzlikins from the game following the third goal. Spencer Martin would take over in net for the Blue Jackets.

With over 15 minutes played in the first, Florida had a 20-1 shot advantage. The Panthers would end the period leading 20-7 in that department.

Columbus’ comeback train was moving

The start of the game was not pretty for the visiting Blue Jackets. They were being heavily outshot, they trailed by three goals just minutes into the game, and the Panthers had the pinned in their own zone for most of the first period. But as we’ve seen countless times in hockey, all you need is one.

Columbus forward Sean Kuraly was able to end Florida’s barrage, getting Columbus on the board 15:41 into first — cutting the Panthers lead to 3-1. Kuraly’s goal was not only important because it got the Blue Jackets on the board, but it was also just Columbus’ second shot of the game.

Finally on the board, the Blue Jackets would add to their tally three minutes later. After an o-zone turnover by the Panthers, Columbus’ captain Boone Jenner would put his sixth goal of the season past former teammate Sergei Bobrovsky. The Panthers three goal lead became just one in a matter of minutes.

Columbus looked down for the count early in the game, but they were able to overcome the terrible start with two unanswered goals late in the first.

The Blue Jackets trailed 3-2 after 20 minutes of play.

Columbus’ comeback campaign would continue pushing along in the second.

After getting the first power play of the night 9:46 into the second, the Blue Jackets would overcome the three-goal deficit. At the 10:02 mark of the period, Kirill Marchenko tied the game at 3-3.

Florida’s performance in the second was a far cry from the first 15 minutes of the game. Columbus flipped the ice, taking all the momentum into the final intermission with the game tied.

The Blue Jackets comeback efforts would eventually result in their first lead of the night.

12:30 into the third period, Columbus’ rally would finally see them on top. Whilst leading the rush into the Panthers’ zone, Alexandre Texier tapped his own deflected pass in behind Bobrovsky, giving the Jackets a 4-3 lead.

Nick Cousins the late game hero

With the game on the line and just a minute remaining, Nick Cousins is probably not the first guy you’d expect to save the day.

Trailing 4-3 with just a few minutes to play in the game, Florida had their top guys on the ice with the goalie pulled.

Blue Jackets goalie Spencer Martin was slamming the door shut in the clutch — preventing the Panthers from tying the game.

“I think he looked great out there,” Gustav Forsling said about Martin post game. Martin would finish the night with 34 saves on 36 shots.

After an extensive shift deep in the Columbus zone led to nothing, the tired Panthers had to make a change, taking most of the top players off the ice.

After a good forecheck by Anton Lundell and Nick Cousins, Jackets defenseman Ivan Provorov could not clear the zone. Cousins would get the turnover near the slot before he fired a shot past Martin to tie the game at 4-4 with 56 seconds remaining in regulation.

Cousins’ goal would prevent the Blue Jackets comeback win, sending the game to overtime instead.

“It feels great. Obviously nice to contribute,” Cousins said when asked about scoring the tying goal. “It’s nice to get that goal there when the team needed it most.”

Carter Verhaeghe comes up with another overtime winner

In overtime, if there’s one guy the Panthers’ trust most to get them over the finish line, it’s Carter Verhaeghe.

After Nick Cousins tied the game in the final moments of the third, the Panthers and Blue Jackets went to overtime to play for the extra point.

In overtime, Columbus had a glorious odd-man rush chance to end the game, but a missed pass allowed Matthew Tkachuk to head man the puck up the ice to Anton Lundell. With Verhaeghe streaking down the wing to his left on a 2-on-1, Lundell fired a low shot on the ice — which was kicked away by Spencer Martin. However, Verheaghe was in the perfect spot to bury the rebound for the game winner.

Verhaeghe’s fourth goal of the season would complete the 5-4 late-game comeback in OT.

“That’s why he’s on the ice in overtime, head coach Paul Maurice said. “If he can get a break and get it on his stick something good might happen.”

The Panthers improve their record to 6-4-1 on thee season. They’ll hit the road Wednesday for a matchup against the Washington Capitals.

Five Takeaways from Heat-Lakers

Here were my initial five takeaways while watching Heat-Lakers tonight:

#1: Bam Adebayo with a ‘do it all’ first half.

11 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists is quite the first half stat-line when purely looking at stats, but his impact is what popped tonight (per usual). For starters, he was extremely aggressive moving downhill, while also stretching things out to the 3 early on. His passing stuck out to me which I’ll get into in a minute, but the defense continues to be an all over the place affair. Drop, switching, zone. The Lakers kept running into him, including him racking up some blocks which seems to be the only thing voters look for. Rotating weak-side at the rim or simply blocking AD at his release point, his two-way impact is undeniable.

#: The Heat’s core 3 guys’ passing proving to be the functional door for the offense.

Bam Adebayo gets the ball on the elbow. Josh Richardson pins down for Duncan Robinson and slips, as Duncan shortly after utilizes a delayed cut. Bam hits him in stride. Copy that formula and apply it to Tyler Herro or any guard on this roster, and that’s how Bam was accumulating most of his first half assists. As for Jimmy Butler and Tyler Herro, an area that has hindered the offense at times this season is only using one side of the court. Ball sticks, defense pinches, and things are tonight. Some things I saw early tonight was Herro and Butler prioritizing the skip. Butler had a rare over-head one to Jaquez weak-side who buried it, and Herro did the same to Robinson late in the clock who side stepped for three. Lack of “point guards” mean those guys are needed in that department.

Duncan Robinson’s confidence carrying over.

Watching Duncan Robinson as of late, it’s clear the guy is extremely comfortable. Timely back-cuts, under the radar passing following over-reaction, and well, the shooting. When I asked Jimmy Butler about those outer areas of Robinson’s game, he says being surprised would only equal “untrained eyes.” He’s a complete basketball player, which was amplified on a first half iso that included a stutter and attack for a layup. But as much as it’s fun to note those developments, the guy is still shooting at a high level. More PnR stuff than early years, and his 3 point percentage is being carried by the pull-up stuff. He’s been key to this team’s offense.

#4: The Heat have found their starting four.

As I mentioned a lot before the season, it made the most sense for Haywood Highsmith to eventually find his way into that starting 4 spot. I figured it would take them until around December to get to it, but a rough start moved the chains quicker than expected. And well, it seems like the perfect fit. They wanted somebody that is 3 and D, and man does it seem like he’s at the high end of that. The shooting is a legit skill for him with the overall consistency we’ve seen, but he doesn’t demand many touches at all while always seeming to be in the right spot. Plus just watching him on defense tonight, I thought he would see more time on LeBron, but his work around screens on the Lakers guard room was huge. That front-court should not shift.

#5: Jaime Jaquez won’t be going anywhere when Caleb Martin returns.

When Jaime Jaquez Jr got drafted, I asked him who he was looking forward to playing against most. “LeBron.” Not only was he playing against him, he guarded him in the majority of his minutes. Got a big steal on one of his early drives, and continues to really hold his own on isolation possessions against star players. Fast forward to the 4th quarter, the Heat were searching for offense before the Jimmy Butler return, Jaquez went on a run of his own. Drives down the lane against the smaller defender, spins inside, and finds the exact angle for the layup. Bam gets the steal on other end, hits Jaquez on the break, sends a shot fake then finishes. Very measured stuff.

An Early Look at the Carolina Panthers 2024 NFL Draft Board

The 2023 NFL season has not gone well for the Carolina Panthers, as they have started 1-7. When that happens, teams may focus on the upcoming NFL Draft as they look to improve their roster for the future. Here, we break down what the 2024 NFL Draft could look like for the Panthers, which players they could take, and who they could avoid based on their current situation.

Offensive Line Help Needed

This Panthers team needs the most help on the offensive and defensive lines. Their offensive line has been incredibly bleak, as rookie quarterback Bryce Young has had less time to throw than the team would want him to during this crucial career development period. This is one of the major reasons that the Panthers are NFL betting underdogs in virtually every game this season and they have yet to get into the win column.

The 2024 NFL Draft could be one where the Panthers could trade into the first round to grab some offensive line help without spending too much. An offensive lineman may not be selected in this draft class until the fifth overall pick, as multiple quarterbacks and Marvin Harrison Jr. are expected to go before any linemen do. That could mean the Panthers trading up to get some line help if they do jump into the first round.

If the Panthers do not trade up, they can still get some reasonably talented offensive linemen when they are slated to open their draft in the second round. Someone like Jordan Morgan, who is helping the Arizona Wildcats exceed expectations despite quarterback injuries, could be a good fit with a Panthers team that simply needs help with their o-line. Other offensive linemen who could be available around the start of the second round are Graham Barton out of Duke or Patrick Paul out of Houston, all of whom would be good fits in Carolina.

Panthers’ Current Draft Situation

Last season, the Carolina Panthers decided to draft a quarterback at the top of the 2023 NFL Draft. However, they did not have the first pick and traded with the Chicago Bears for this player. That trade resulted in the Panthers drafting Bryce Young first overall, with the Panthers giving the Bears their 2024 first-round pick in exchange for the ability to take the quarterback from Alabama.

The problem for Carolina is that Young has not been excellent in his rookie season, which has contributed to the perceived lack of identity for the franchise at this juncture. They would’ve been in line to receive the top pick in the next NFL Draft again this season had the Panthers not traded out of the first round with Chicago to get Young in the previous draft.

This leaves the Panthers with a couple of options for the 2024 draft. They can either trade back into the first round again this year, giving up other picks to do so. Or they can simply enter this year’s draft with selections in the second round and beyond. Doing so would limit which players they have to choose from but could prevent future restraints in the next draft and other upcoming drafts.

Carolina QB Situation Makes Things Interesting

Also interesting for the Panthers is where their current quarterback situation leaves them when looking ahead to the next NFL Draft. Drafting Young over CJ Stroud — an Offensive Rookie of the Year favorite — does not look like a smart move for the Panthers thus far. But the franchise appears to be committed to Young with their trade deadline strategy, which could be a sign of things for the next draft.

If the Panthers are making trades with the development of Young in mind, they are unlikely to draft a quarterback in 2024. That would significantly decrease the likelihood of them trading into the first round to grab a player at another position. It would also mean that the Panthers would likely pass on quarterbacks currently graded to go in the second round, such as Michael Penix Jr. or Shedeur Sanders.

Along with a likely refusal to draft another quarterback so soon into Young’s career, the question will be whether or not the Panthers will recruit some skill position talent to help their quarterback. It does not appear that skill position talent is a massive issue for the Panthers, as they have talented players like Miles Sanders and Adam Thielen. However, the temptation to bring in a rookie wide receiver for Young will be there in the second round and elsewhere for Carolina.

To summarize the current situation for the Carolina Panthers, they need to put a respectable roster around Bryce Young as soon as possible to determine if he is their future quarterback. To do that, some wise draft strategy will be required, whether trading back into the first round or staying put in 2024. In either case, the priority has to be pass protection and giving their young signal caller a chance to make plays.

Best Record Eagles Continue to Rise in NFL

The 2022–23 Philadelphia Eagles surprised the world with their run to the Super Bowl. Led by former second-round pick Jalen Hurts, a vaunted defense, and one of the best wide receiving duos in the league in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, Philadelphia nearly brought home the second Lombardi Trophy in team history.

Thanks to last season, the Eagles’ net worth is as high as ever. They’ve even added several players to help bring a championship home in 2023–24, and they’re now an NFL-best 8-1 after a win against the rival Dallas Cowboys. Here’s what you need to know.

Eagles’ Net Worth

Philadelphia has always loved its football team. One of the oldest franchises in the league, the Eagles won three championships between 1945 and 1960 before entering a long wilderness period. Between 1961 and 1977, Philadelphia never reached the playoffs and only had a winning record twice.

Aside from a surprising Super Bowl appearance in 1980, there wasn’t tremendous success between 1978 and 1993 before current owner Jeffrey Lurie bought the team in 1994. After hiring Andy Reid in 1999 and building a competitive NFL roster at the turn of the century, the Eagles’ fortunes began to change.

Under Reid, the Eagles made the playoffs nine times in 14 seasons, reaching the NFC Championship game four times and the Super Bowl in 2004. Lurie had bought the team for $195 million, and as of 2023, the team’s value jumped to $5.8 billion, the 10th-most valuable team in football. That number will only continue to grow as the team adds more talent.

Free Agent Signing Terrell Edmunds

The secondary that helped Philadelphia reach the Super Bowl was dealt a severe blow when safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson signed a one-year, $6.5 million contract with the Lions. They nearly lost Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay as well before signing him to a three-year, $42 million contract.

Needing help in the secondary, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman signed former Steelers starting safety Terrell Edmunds, a solid player, to replace Gardner-Johnson. Edmunds logged 70 tackles last season in Pittsburg, along with two sacks. Unlike Gardner-Johnson, however, Edmunds doesn’t generate turnovers.

Gardner-Johnson hauled in a league-leading six interceptions last season, while Edmunds has just five interceptions in his six seasons.

Free Agent Signing Marcus Mariota

As the former second overall pick in the 2015 draft, Mariota spent two seasons backing up Derek Carr in Las Vegas before getting the opportunity to start again in Atlanta. The results were a mixed bag. He went 5-8 as the starter and averaged just 170 passing yards per game, the lowest number of his career. When he got benched for his rookie teammate Desmond Ridder, Mariota left the team. Head coach Arthur Smith noted that Mariota had been dealing with a knee injury but didn’t say that was why he was gone.

Fast forward to 2023, and Mariota signed a one-year, $5 million deal to back up MVP candidate Jalen Hurts. While Mariota’s drama with the Falcons is surprising, he did attempt to set the record straight. Mariota looks like one of the best backup quarterbacks in the league in a new environment, perfectly equipped to fill in for Hurts if needed.

First-Round Draft Pick Jalen Carter

Entering the 2023 draft, Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter was a consensus top-5 draft prospect, ranked as high as #2 by sports analytics company Pro Football Focus (PFF). In fact, PFF says Carter was “neck and neck with Quinnen Williams” for the best defensive tackle prospect ever graded by the publication. However, his draft stock plummeted after he was involved in a fatal car crash celebrating Georgia’s national championship. He pleaded no contest to the charges against him for his involvement and received 12 months probation.

The unfortunate circumstances allowed the Eagles to snatch him up with the ninth overall pick, with teams before Philadelphia not wanting to risk a pick on the lineman. Carter joined a defensive line that is already among the best in the league, featuring perennial Pro Bowler Fletcher Cox and star edge rushers Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat.

First-Round Draft Pick Nolan Smith

Philadelphia got another great value pick at #30, drafting linebacker Nolan Smith. The linebacker ranked #13 on PFF’s big board, but his lack of size at under 240 pounds as an edge rusher caused him to fall in the draft. Smith joined the strongest pass rush in the NFL, allowing him to occupy a backup role as he adapts to the NFL. So far this season, Smith has dealt with injuries — but will surely be a third-down pass rush specialist when healthy again.

What Is Next for the Eagles?

The Eagles were already a dynamic franchise prior to 2022. Having won their first Super Bowl in 2017, Philadelphia is one of the most respected teams in the NFL. However, the improbable Super Bowl run in 2022–23 only improved the team’s net worth. Not only that, but a tremendous draft class makes one of the best defenses in football even better.

Barkov and Bobrovsky hit career milestones in Panthers 2-0 win over Red Wings

The Florida Panthers bounced back from their recent overtime loss in Boston, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena.

On the shoulders of Sergei Bobrovsky’s 22-save shutout performance, the Panthers improved their record to 5-3-1.

Here’s tonight’s takeaways.

Not a special night for special-teams

In a game that saw 10 total power plays, shockingly there were no special-teams goals.

The Panthers and Red Wings each had five chances on the man-advantage Thursday night, yet neither side could capitalize with an extra man.

Entering Thursday’s game Florida’s power play ranked 23rd in the league at just 14.3 percent. While they had nine shots on their five power play attempts — the man-advantage continued to struggle, going 0 for 5 on the night.

Compared to Florida, Detroit’s power play had been quite successful prior to Thursday’s matchup, ranking fourth in the league (32.4 percent).

Florida was able to keep the dangerous Wings power play from igniting, killing off all five of their opportunities.

“I think our penalty kill is a lot like our powerplay. The numbers aren’t very good at all,” head coach Paul Maurice said. “But, we’ve been perfect in our last three games… They battled hard. We won faceoffs, they blocked shots and we got saves, that’s penalty killing.”

Steven Lorentz gets his first goal as a Panther

Ever since Steven Lorentz arrived in South Florida this summer, the 27-year-old has been all smiles.

Thursday night there was another reason for Lorentz to be happy — he scored his first goal with the Panthers.

With the game still scoreless in the final minute of the second period, Lorentz would break the deadlock.

Coming into the Detroit zone down the left side, Lorentz sent a relatively harmless shot on goal towards Red Wings goalie James Reimer.  The puck would bounce off Reimer’s glove, onto the crossbar, then off Reimer’s back before going in the net.

“It felt good,” Lorentz said about his goal. “Anytime you get a goal in the first or last minute of the period it’s a bit of a backbreaker for the other team.”

It was definitely a weird series of events leading up to the goal that gave Florida a 1-0 lead — but they don’t ask how it went in on the box score.

The goal was also Lorentz’s first point of the season.

Sergei Bobrovsky gets first shutout of the season, plays 650th career game

It’s been a busy start to the regular season for Florida’s No. 1 goalie. Bobrovsky has started all but one of Florida’s nine games so far this season, and tonight was a milestone night for the Russian netminder.

Bobrovsky became the 41st goaltender in the history of the National Hockey League to play in 650 career games.

“It’s a great win,” Bobrovsky said postgame. “You don’t think too much about your personal achievements. I think we all focus now on the standings and that team (Detroit) is ahead of us.”

On his big night, Bobrovsky would stop all 22 shots he faced  — picking up his 39th career shutout, and first since December 13, 2022 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

“Bobby obviously stood on his head,” Lorentz said. “Game 650, that’s an unbelievable accomplishment, and what a way to show it, him coming out here and getting a shutout.”

Bobrosvky is now at four wins on the season.

Aleksander Barkov sets franchise record

On the same night as Bobrovsky’s milestone, Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov became the franchises’ all-time leader in games played with 672.

Drafted second-overall in 2013 by the Panthers, Barkov has been with the organization since he was 17-years-old.

The once baby faced Barkov has evolved into one of the best two-way forwards in the NHL and a face of hockey in South Florida.

“He does it all. He can do everything,” Bobrovsky said about Barkov. “If you give him goalie gear he’s going to be great at it. It’s great to have him on the team.”

Tonight Barkov surpassed his former teammate and friend Jonathan Huberdeau for sole possession of the Panthers’ franchise record for games played.

At 28-years-old, Barkov is already in year 11 of his NHL career. Over the last decade, the Finnish forward has gained respect from his teammates, coaches, and opponents across hockey.

“He hasn’t changed, he’s the exact same player,” said Dmitry Kulikov — who was with Florida when Barkov was a rookie. “He came into the league good and he’s still really good.”

Tua Tagovailoa will miss the Dolphins' game at New England and possibly more.

NFL Power Rankings Week 8: Dolphins at #2

Another week of the NFL season can be crossed off as we enter the month of November in what seems to feel like a season that has been flying by.

While some teams don’t want the season to go by, others are desperately praying to get it over with because things have not been going well at all.

The Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, New York Giants, Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots, just to name a few, are teams that fall under the category of wishing there was a skip button to the end of the season.

The Cardinals hold the league’s longest losing streak after they lost their fifth game in a row against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday but after starting out their season 2-1, all of a sudden, the Packers have lost four-straight games and are 2-5. Green Bay’s quarterback, Jordan Love, has really struggled trying to fill Aaron Rodgers’ shoes as he completed just 24 of his 41 passes for 229 yards and an interception in the loss to the Vikings.

The Bears and Giants are dealing with quarterback injuries and are forced to play their second and even third string quarterback which, most of the time, doesn’t end well. Chicago got blown against the Chargers 30-13 and the Giants lost a heartbreaker to the Jets in an extremely ugly game for both teams.

Have the Titans found their quarterback of the future? Will Levis got his first career start on Sunday and it looked like he was playing against high schoolers. The rookie out of Kentucky threw for 238 yards and four touchdowns while allowing star receiver Deandre Hopkins to finally have his best game in a Titans uniform. Hopkins had four catches for 128 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-23 win against the Falcons.

Minnesota’s injury woes continue as they lost quarterback Kirk Cousins for the rest of the season due to a torn achilles he suffered against the Packers. It is absolutely devastating for Minnesota because they looked like a team that finally found their groove after beating the 49ers last week and then going into Lambeau Field and making a statement. Cousins was also having a very good year throwing for 2,331 yards and 18 touchdowns. It will be interesting to see how this Vikings team will fare going forward.

The San Francisco 49ers have completely fallen off the face of the Earth. What has happened to them? They started out the year 5-0 and have now lost three games in a row. Quarterback Brock Purdy all of a sudden looks like “Mr. Irrelevant” and that Niners defense that is often highly praised has completely disappeared. Don’t look now but the Seattle Seahawks are in the lead in the NFC West division and if San Francisco doesn’t get it together, their hopes for a division title can easily get out of reach.

And now we can talk about the fastest team on the planet. The revamped ‘Greatest Show on Turf’. The 6-2 Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins hosted the Patriots on Sunday in what some feared to be a trap game for Miami as they would face the Chiefs in their next game in Germany. But, Miami looked locked in from the get go.

Tua Tagovailoa continued to make his case for the MVP as he threw for 324 yards and three touchdowns. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle each had over 100 receiving yards. Hill had eight catches for 112 yards and a touchdown while Waddle caught seven passes for 121 yards and a touchdown.

But even with all the noise offensively, the story of the day was the return of All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey. In his Dolphins debut, Ramsey recorded an interception and showed how much of an impact he can make on this defense for Miami.

Oh, and Tagovailoa is 6-0 in his career against Bill Belichick. So yeah, there’s that.
