Panthers Aleksander Barkov out ‘two to three’ weeks with lower-body injury

Panthers head coach Paul Maurice said on Saturday that captain Aleksander Barkov would be out for what they think to be “two to three weeks” after sustaining a lower-body injury on Thursday night in Ottawa.

After breaking his stick on a shot, Barkov crashed into the boards — feet-first — in an attempt to stop an empty net goal.

The 29-year-old star forward was very slow to get to his feet, requiring assistance from a team trainer and his teammates before gingerly making his way to the Panthers’ dressing room.

According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, imaging showed that Barkov did not sustain a fracture — presumably to his foot.

Anytime without their two-time Selke winner will be tough for Florida, but his absence being just a few weeks is a small positive to the situation.

His projected timetable to return is right in line with the Panthers’ trip to Finland, where they’ll play two games against the Dallas Stars — Nov. 1-2 —  in Barkov’s hometown of Tampere.

With Barkov out, the Panthers brought up rookie forward Patrick Giles on Monday from AHL Charlotte.

Giles, 24, gets the early season call up following an impressive training camp — where he made a case to make the opening-night roster.

To make room for Giles, Florida placed forward Tomas Nosek on Long-Term Injured Reserve. Nosek(upper-body) hasn’t played this regular season. Nosek was previously on IR.

Giles is expected to make his NHL debut tonight in Buffalo.

Without Barkov, Florida will have to do some line juggling. It appears that the Luostarinen, Lundell, Reinhart line from 2023 will make a comeback — they were taking reps together during Saturday’s morning skate, per Panthers’ Sr. Digital Content Manager Jameson Olive.

Florida’s 3-1 loss on Thursday night to the Ottawa Senators is an afterthought following the apparent injury to their captain Aleksander Barkov. 

 

In the final 70 seconds of the game, after breaking his stick on a shot, Barkov raced back to try and prevent Tim Stutzle from sealing an empty net goal. 

 

As Stutzle put away the shot, Barkov fell awkwardly, going feet first into the boards at full speed. 

 

The 29-year-old was assisted to his feet by a member of the Panthers training staff and two of his teammates. On the way up he appeared to shake his head, before going back to the bench gingerly and assisted. Barkov would go straight to the Panthers locker room. 

 

Head coach Paul Maurice didn’t have an update on Barkov — which isn’t a surprise as the injury happened late in the game. 

 

“He’s going to get looked at here tonight and probably tomorrow as well,” Maurice said postgame. 

 

The Panthers will be off tomorrow, so an update on the health of Barkov should come on Saturday, ahead of the team’s next game in Buffalo.

SUNRISE — Aleksander Barkov hit the ice with the Stanley Cup raised over his head for one final time this year — before he and his Florida Panthers teammates stood by each other on the blueline as they watched their 2024 Stanley Cup banner raise to the rafters of Amerant Bank Arena. 

 

This historic night in Sunrise was one the franchise awaited for 30 years. The sold out crowd cheered on their champions as the team applauded their fans. One final team picture with the Cup iced off Florida’s summer as champions and with that, the start to the 2024-25 NHL season.

 

When the puck dropped on Tuesday night, there was no Cup hangover for the hometown Panthers. They scored four goals in the opening period, en route to a 6-4 win over the Boston Bruins. 

 

“It’s an emotional start to the season,” Sam Bennett said. “Obviously seeing that banner going up, shoulder to shoulder with all the guys, it was a pretty special moment. I think it definitely gave us a little juice to start the season off and we came out flying.”

 

Contract year Bennett gets rolling

Florida’s ‘big 3’ pending UFAs this season are Carter Verhaeghe, Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad, or at least that’s what we thought. Bill Zito brought Carter Verhaeghe into the media scrum post game to announce that the team signed the forward to an eight-year extension. 

 

So,‘big 2’ now. 

 

Last season, Sam Reinhart was the big Panther forward looking to lock up a contract extension. All he did was bury 57 goals — the second most goals in the NHL that year. 

 

On Tuesday, Bennett wasted no time getting his contract year off to a hot start.

 

6:27 into the first,  Bennett opened the scoring with his first of two goals on the night. 

 

“He’s fast, he’s heavy and he;s got finishing hands,” Panthers coach Paul Maurice said of Bennett.” I thought that line was very, very strong.

 

His second goal came with 26 seconds remaining in the period — giving the Panthers  4-1 lead into the break. 

 

No love lost in this new Atlantic Division rivalry 

Florida-Boston has become much watch hockey over the past two seasons. Being in the same division, they’ve seen each other a ton in the regular season, but the playoffs is where the real hatred between these two teams has come to brew. 

 

“It’s a great way to start the season,” Paul Maurice spoke about facing Boston. “You know you’re not wading into it. It’s not a no hitter, up and down puck mover… it was on.”

 

The Panthers obviously beat the Bruins in each of the past two postseasons before reaching the Stanley Cup Final. Those playoff series were always played hard; plenty of big hits, fights and trash talking. 

 

No surprise that opening night saw a lot of that. 

 

AJ Greer and Mark Kastelic got the ball rolling when the two heavy weights dropped the gloves less than six minutes into the game.

 

The actual box score didn’t have too many penalty minutes — at least for this matchup — with 34 total between the two sides, but the numbers didn’t tell the whole story. 

 

And shocker, Matthew Tkachuk is still disliked by the Bruins, which was clear as multiple players tried dropping the gloves with him.  

 

Boston hang Korpisalo to dry, keep Swayman on the bench

After ending his contract hold out by signing an eight-year, $66M extension with the Bruins on Sunday, Jeremy Swayman watched from the bench as his new goalie partner Joonas Korpisalo got lit up by the Panthers.

 

To be clear, the Bruins did not give Korpisalo much help early on Tuesday. Florida started the season the same way they ended their Cup run — a physical, hard forecheck.

 

Florida skated Boston into the ground in the first period — and the offense came with it. Florida beat Korpisalo four times on 17 shots in the opening frame. 


When Swayman remained on the bench to start the second period, the feeling in the rink was that he wouldn’t see the ice — that feeling was right. 

 

The sold out crowd in Sunrise had their fun poking the bear as they chanted “we want Swayman” after the Panthers scored their fifth goal of the game.

Korpisalo would play the full game, giving up six goals on 35 shots.

 

NOTES

Defensemen Adam Boqvist left Tuesday’s game in the first period after taking a puck to the face. Pau Maurice said he would be brought in on Wednesday for imaging and that right now they  are “hopeful”.

 

Chris Driedger, who was the Panthers’ backup on Tuesday, was placed on waivers earlier in the day. If he clears, he will report to AHL Charlotte. Spencer Knight is expected to return after being sent down to the AHL ahead of opening-night roster deadlines — which appeared to be a cap move.

Carter Verhaeghe signs eight-year extension with Panthers

SUNRISE — While getting dressed for Tuesday’s home opener, Carter Verhaeghe found out his contract extension was finalized with the Florida Panthers.

 

After Tuesday’s win, Panthers GM Bill Zito — with Verhaeghe next to him — told media that the team and Verhaeghe agreed to an eight-year contract extension.

 

“I was halfway dressed,” Verhaeghe said when asked about when he learned the news. “I went in and he [Zito] told me it was done. I was happy to get it done before the game.”

 

The 29-year-old was entering the final season of his three-year contract, where he was making $4.16M a season. 

 

Verhaeghe was one of the first acquisitions Zito made when he took over the helm ahead of the 2020-21 season. At that time, Verhaeghe was signed to a two-year, $2M contract — after the Tampa Bay Lightning elected to not bring him back following their 2020 Stanley Cup win.

 

Four years later, Verhaeghe is now a two-time Stanley Cup champion — and was one of the key contributors for the Panthers’ run.

 

When Verhaeghe signed on a near minimum contract with the Panthers back in 2020, he didn’t think he’d be signing an eight-year extension, or be a a big player en route to his second Stanley Cup.

 

“No, not a chance,” Verhaeghe responded to the question. “I think coming here I just took it day by day. Obviously you want to win the Stanley Cup, that’s the goal. It was kind of my goal to come here and build it but you never know if it’s going to come true or what happens. It’s crazy that it came true and to do it with this group of guys, this organization.”

 

In the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Verhaeghe led all Panthers skaters in goals (11) and was third on the team in scoring with 21 points.

 

“I’m so proud to be able to wear the Panther logo for a long time,” Verhaeghe added. “It wouldn’t be right wearing any other sweater.”

 

After just four seasons, Verhaeghe has proven to be one of the most important players in franchise history.

 

He is is the Panthers all-time playoff leader in goals (26), even-strength goals (21), even-strength points (46), overtime goals (5) and game-winning goals (10). He also owns the club record for points in a postseason series with 12 (6-6-12) in six games over the Capitals in 2022.

 

In his first four seasons with the Panthers, Verhaeghe put up 118 goals and 118 points for 236 points in 278 regular season games.

 

All the superlatives that we used about our team, Carter lives them everyday,” Zito said when announcing Verhaeghe’s extension. “We’re very blessed to have him.”

They came so close last season. The number of wins were tied, the goal difference was the same, but after the final match of the 2023/24 season, two points separated Arsenal FC from eventual champions Manchester City. Mikel Arteta’s men had pushed Pep Guardiola’s troops the whole way, but ultimately fell just short in their quest for a first Premier League title since the invincible 2003/04 season. 

 

Despite the fact the current season is only in its infancy, there is already enough to suggest that Arteta’s men will once again challenge for the crown and ultimately put a stop to the Manchester City juggernaut. Guardiola’s men have won the previous four titles and six in the last seven Premier League editions. However, a mixture of extra grit, better depth in squad, and the loss of an influential player for Manchester City have made Arsenal an even stronger force this season, perhaps a title winning one.

Smart Summer Transfers

Florida Panthers Sell Out 2024-25 Season Tickets

Amerant Bank Arena has been called many names in its 26-year history. Whether it was National Car Rental Center, Office Depot Center, Bank Atlantic Center, BB&T Center or FLA Live Arena; the Sunrise hockey facility on 1 Panther Parkway — just across the street from an outlet Mall — is now the place to be in South Florida.

 

On Tuesday morning — just a few hours before the Florida Panthers are set to raise its first Stanley Cup champion banner — the team announced that they sold out of season tickets for the first time in franchise history.  

 

After making the Stanley Cup Final in 2023, the Panthers sold out its lower-bowl season tickets for the 2023-24 season. The Panthers would go on to win the franchise’s first Stanley Cup that season.

 

“After a historic and exciting Championship season, we are thrilled to announce that our season tickets for the 2024-25 season are sold out thanks to our loyal and passionate South Florida fanbase,” said Panthers Chief Revenue Officer Shawn Thornton. “The energy and atmosphere of Amerant Bank Arena will continue to be electric this year and we can’t wait to deliver exceptional experiences for our members.” 

 

If you build it, they will come. That’s what the Panthers have done for hockey in South Florida. 

 

They are no longer the team that needs to fend off the Quebec City relocation  rumors, or close off the upper-level of a once empty arena. Florida is now a destination team in the league and with the roster they have, it will continue to be for quite some time

 

While the Territory Memberships have sold out for the 2024-25 season, fans who aren’t season ticket holders won’t be left in the dark. The Panthers reserve a portion of ticket and suite inventory for all games through the season, so fans can still purchase tickets for the games. 

 

The Panthers aren’t going anywhere and neither are their six fans.
