Takeaways: Panthers Defeat Knights in Stanley Cup Final Rematch

SUNRISE — The Florida Panthers faced the defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights for the first time since last season’s cup final on Saturday. The extremely physical contest saw the Panthers winners, defeating the Knights 4-2 at Amerant Bank Arena.

Sergei Bobrovsky had 23 saves in his 15th win of the season. The Panthers enter the holiday break in a playoff spot with a 19-12-2 record.

Here’s today’s takeaways.

Panthers come out firing in the first

The ice was tilted heavily in Florida’s favor in the opening 20 minutes.

Florida came out of the gates hot and ready to play in the first period. Vegas were on their heels for nearly the entirety of the opening period.

Knights’ goalie Jiri Patera didn’t have much help, facing 20 shots in the period. His teammates couldn’t generate much the other way, getting just three total shots on Sergei Bobrovsky.

The Knights had an xGF (expected goals) of 0.1 in the period. The Panthers had an xGF of 1.67, per Natural Stat Trick

“The first period was about, stylistically as close to the game that we want to play,” coach Paul Maurice said.

Despite the flat out domination by Florida in the opening frame, the score was still 0-0 as the two teams went into the break.

Vegas bounced back well in the second, taking the lead just 1:21 into the period from Mark Stone’s 11th goal of the year

The one goal deficit didn’t deter the Panthers, as they did end up scoring four times on Saturday in the win.

Tensions carry over from June

These two sides haven’t seen each other since Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final — where the Knights would hoist the cup on home ice.

While the summer was cheerful  for the Knights, it was a disappointing one for the Panthers.

The pleasantries from last season’s final were not lost on Saturday.

With the game still scoreless in the first, Ryan Lomberg and Keegan Kolesar dropped the gloves. Lomberg needed just one punch to takedown Kolesar, thus setting up for a feisty remainder of the contest.

There was some history there. Kolesar was the player who hit Matthew Tkachuk in Game 3 — which led to Tkachuk fracturing his sternum.

“Credit to him for kind of letting me geet redemption for last year… he’s the guy that caught Chucky to take him out of the series,” Lomberg said. “He was obviously understanding and gave me my shot there.”

The game saw a total of 80 penalty minutes between both teams (41 FLA, 39 VGK). For score keeping sake, five misconducts and two roughing penalties were given out at the buzzer.

“There’s still a lot of ballet out there, but then it’s a bare knuckles fight at sometimes too,” Maurice said when talking about the extracurricular activities.

Florida cashes in twice on the power play

The Panthers’ strong suit this season has not been their power play.

Entering Saturday’s afternoon fixture, the Panthers were 23rd in the league on the power play, scoring just 18 times on 100 attempts (18 percent).

With the game tied in the third period, Carter Verhaeghe scored on Florida’s fourth power play attempt of the night — giving Floriida a 3-2 lead.

Less than 90 seconds after Verhaeghe’s go-ahead goal, the Panthers would return to the man-advantage.

Sam Reinhart doubled Florida’s lead 8:09 into the third — Florida’s second with the extra man.

“The power play was good tonight,” Verhaeghe said. “We had a couple opportunities which was nice… it’s definitely huge going forward.”

This was just the fourth time all season where the Panthers had multiple power play goals.

Panthers Notes

Florida’s next game will be Dec. 27 in Tampa.

Carter Verhaeghe scored his 100th goal as a Panthers

‘This is Fort Lauderdale’: Panthers move into their new practice facility at the FTL War Memorial

FORT LAUDERDALE — Paul Maurice opted for a short walk from his house to the rink on Friday morning. Meanwhile, some of his players picked up the keys to their golf carts rather than their cars for the work commute.

With Christmas just a few days away, the Panthers got a big gift as they finally took the ice at their new state-of-the-art practice facility — the Baptist Health IcePlex at FTL War Memorial.

“I feel like Santa Claus has arrived early,” Panthers President Matthew Caldwell said. “A lot of blood sweat and tears went into making this first class… we couldn’t be more excited.”

On the grounds of the old FTL War Memorial, the Panthers rejuvenated the 73-year-old building — transforming it into a world class hockey and recreational complex, just minutes from the beach and world renowned Las Olas Boulevard.

“This is where it is. This is Fort Lauderdale. This is Broward,” Panthers GM Bill Zito said. “For me it was hard to appreciate it until I got here and now I should be the spokesman. I tell everyone, Broward, its unbelievable.”

With many of the players and staff calling Fort Lauderdale home, the location of the new facility is perfect for a great deal of the team.

“For a big bulk of our guys that are in the area now, you get to the rink a little bit quicker,” Maurice said. “I walked, that’s a nice change for me.”

The former practice facility was located in Coral Springs, which is around 35 minutes from the War Memorial. The players located in Fort Lauderdale won’t miss that drive.

“I’m probably going to sound spoiled but I don’t have to drive 30 minutes anymore. Now it’s just up the road.” Matthew Tkachuk said joyfully.  “I’ve been pushing for us to move in here as fast as possible.”

It’s been a long time coming for this project. The Panthers broke ground on their new facility back in May of 2021. Over 2 1/2 years later, the team finally moved in.

From the seats and the massive digital scoreboard, to the natural light coming in from behind the net, the rink had a luxury feel to it and the players loved it.

When everything is complete, the building will host two ice sheets — with 1,000 seats for fans, a restaurant, retail store, concert venue and more “surprises” that Zito couldn’t spill just yet.

Players will have 24-hour access to the facility which boasts endless amenities — such as pickleball courts, lounging areas, a full gym, barbeques on an outdoor terrace and a fantastic locker room.

Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov was one of the handful of players who mentioned their satisfaction with the number of TVs that were spread out across the facility.

“It’s very convenient, everything is right here,” Barkov said regarding the setup. “The beach is here too if you want to swim before or after practice.”

The past year has been an eventful one for the organization. In February, they hosted the NHL All Star game — with many of the events taking place down the street in Fort Lauderdale. When June rolled around, team played in their first Stanley Cup Final since 1996. Now, they end the year in their new training facility — which ended up costing way more than the original $65 million plan.

For now, the practices are closed as the rest of the building is being completed. The full opening should come around early 2024.

“We’ll do a big ribbon cutting for that and then open it up to the public. Probably do open practices,” Caldwell said. “We want to get the community, the fans, living and breathing this place.”

Takeaways: Panthers offense struggles, lose 4-1 to Blues

SUNRISE — Florida’s first home game in almost two weeks seemed like a continuation of their last road trip out West. The Panthers had plenty of chances, outshot their opposition, yet they still found themselves with a 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues.

The Panthers have dropped four of their last five games, scoring just seven goals over that stretch —  five of which came in the lone win. Florida falls to 18-12-2 on the season.

Here’s tonight’s takeaways.

Second period Blues

After a scoreless and fairly uneventful opening period, the next twenty minutes of game time was the opposite.

Jordan Kyrou broke the ice with his seventh goal of the season 4:50 into the second.

On the following shift, Pavel Buchnevich appeared to have doubled the Blues’ lead 23 seconds after Kyrou’s goal. However, after a coach’s challenge the goal was brought back for offsides.

Buchenevich would eventually get his goal at the 7:46 mark of the period — putting the Blues up 2-0.

Eetu Luostarinen got the Panthers first and only goal of the game 13:47 into second off  a dump in, not a shot. Luostarinen’s dump wrapped  off the curved fixture on the glass and into an empty Blues net. Joel Hofer went behind the goal in anticipation of a routine dump in.

Florida had the deficit down to one and the crowd had finally got into the game — St. Louis didn’t allow that to last long.

Alexey Toropchenko reclaimed the Blues’ two-goal lead with 3:13 left in the second. St. Louis went into the third up 3-1.

Panthers struggle to score, again

Florida had just one goal on Thursday and it was more of a lucky bounce than anything.

The Panthers have won just two of 13 games this season where they scored two or less goals. When the Panthers have scored at least three times, they are 16-3.

“I think we’re getting chances. It’s not going our way,” Luostarinen said. “We’re getting frustrated a little bit… We’re forcing plays and that’s costing us.”

The offensive struggles have been prevalent over the last two weeks, with the Panthers being shutout in back to back games before having another set of consecutive night’s where they scored just once. The only dominant offensive game in the last five came in Edmonton where they put five past Calvin Pickard.

Lines go into a blender, not much helped

Not a lot was going for the Panthers on Thursday, so Paul Maurice threw everything he could in a blender, hoping for something to work.

Maurice swapped Matthew Tkachuk with Evan Rodrigues on the first line to put him with Barkov, which doesn’t happen all that often.

“You’re looking for a little bit of a catalyst change, just something [to see] if you can get it going,” Maurice said. “It didn’t make anything better.”

Will Lockwood also made a jump from the fourth line to the third, pushing Nick Cousins down with Lomberg and Lorentz.

The fourth line actually had the most noticeable impact after the line shuffling. Ryan Lomberg appeared to have cut the Blues two goal lead to just one, 2:30 into the third after he deflected Cousin’s shot past Hofer. But the goal would be waived off due to a high stick.

St. Louis would close off the game with an empty netter from Pavel Buchnevich — his second goal of the night.

Panthers Notes

Florida will host the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday Dec. 23 in a rematch of last season’s Stanley Cup Final.

Florida will hold their first practice at their new practice facility in Fort. Lauderdale on Friday.

Anton Lundell and Jonah Gadjovich both missed Thursday’s game with illness. Lundell hasn’t played in the last four, Gadjovich in the last five.

State of the Fins: Where Miami Dolphins stand with just 3 games left.

In the wake of Monday night’s devastating collapse against the Titans during prime time, the Miami Dolphins faced a critical crossroads heading into their next matchup against the Jets: succumb to a potential repeat of last year’s December meltdown by continuing to lose, or regroup, rebound, and return to the dominating Dolphins football seen throughout the season with a bounce back win.

In an impressive display of resilience, the Dolphins chose the latter path, securing a resounding 30-0 shutout victory at home against the Jets despite a significant absence of key players, including WR Tyreek Hill, CB Xavien Howard, S Jevon Holland, S Deshon Elliot, G Robert Hunt, C Connor Williams, T Isaiah Wynn, OLB Jaelan Phillips, and LB Jerome Baker.

Describing this performance as merely resilient would be an understatement. It was a testament to the team’s fortitude amidst a blend of crucial injuries, numerous prevailing narratives circulating throughout the NFL media, and the broader context of rebounding from their most disheartening loss of the season thus far.

Amidst numerous narratives, the spotlight landed on Tua Tagovailoa, Mike McDaniel, and the offense grappling with the challenge of functioning without the league-deserving MVP, Tyreek Hill.

Fans were banking on the Jaylen Waddle show after the hope for the Cheetah’s appearance against the Jets faded abruptly as the inactive list revealed Hill’s unexpected absence – the first game he would miss in his short Dolphins tenure.

8 receptions for 142 yards and a touchdown against a solid Jets secondary is what Jaylen Waddle racked up in the absence of Hill. Putting to sleep all doubts of whether he could be a reliable WR1 for the Fins, Jaylen Waddle emerged as a standout force. Simultaneously, his performance effectively buried any uncertainties surrounding the potency of this Dolphins offense without Tyreek Hill.

However, it would take a fool not to notice the inevitable adjustment in McDaniel’s game plan sans the Cheetah. Coach McDaniel was tasked with devising a strategy considering Hill’s potential absence. The resultant offensive game plan was notably more conservative, lacking, to an extent, the usual arial prowess, explosiveness, and chunk plays—expected when the most explosive wide receiver in football is sidelined.

Coach McDaniel and his staff opted to play to their strengths, adapting to the circumstances by leveraging the available resources. Despite injuries, they still possessed a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback and a decent arsenal of weapons, albeit an ailing offensive line. They crafted a game plan that was relatively conservative yet remained effective.

How effective was it? Well, Tua Tagovailoa’s first incompletion didn’t occur until 2:50 left in the first half, a testament to the precision and efficiency of the adapted game plan.

Where do the Dolphins stand with 3 games remaining?

The bad news? The Buffalo Bills seem to have found their groove, securing a solid two-game win streak by triumphing over the Chiefs and Cowboys. Their path ahead seems relatively smooth, facing a far less challenging schedule until their pivotal clash with the Dolphins in the regular seasons finale, potentially dictating the divisional outcome.

But for the Dolphins, it’s tough. —an uphill battle against one of the toughest remaining schedules in the league. The objective remains crystal clear: winning is non-negotiable. Sweeping the table against the Cowboys, Ravens, and Bills secures Miami the coveted top seed in the AFC. Yet, a stumble or two could place the AFC East crown within Buffalo’s reach.

In the final three weeks of the regular season, much will be learned about this team. The Dolphins are still nursing injuries to key players while facing formidable opponents. To challenge the narrative and stand tall against top-tier teams, they’ll need to operate within their strengths, fortify the formidable defense, and ride Sunday’s momentum without allowing the magnitude of the moment to overwhelm them.

Panthers Bounce Back Strong In Edmonton, Defeat Oilers 5-1

After two consecutive rough games out West, the Florida Panthers got back on track Saturday night in Edmonton, defeating the Oilers  5-1.

Sergei Bobrovsky had 38 saves in his 14th win of the season. The Panthers’ goaltender also picked up his first regular season point as a Panther.

Two games into the Western Conference portion of their current road trip, the Panthers had been snake bitten.

Entering Saturday’s contest, the Panthers were shutout in their past two games, which was the first time in 12 years that’s happened to them.

5:53 into the first, Carter Verhaeghe finally broke the drought — scoring Florida’s first goal in three games.

The Panthers as a whole will be relieved that they broke free of their short but troublesome scoreless spell. One of their top defensemen will also be happy with the events of Saturday night.

Brandon Montour gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead with 62 seconds remaining in the first period —  his first goal of the season.

Montour led all Panthers defensemen in scoring last season with 73 points (fifth amongst all NHL defensemen). This season, Montour didn’t play in his first game until mid November due to an injury he picked up at the end of last postseason. He had just two assists and no goals  in 13 games up until Saturday night.

“It’s one of those that producing wise isn’t always going to be there,” Montour said to Bally Sports Florida’s’ reporter Katie Engelson. “I just wanted to play, get the confidence back, play hard defensively… hopefully I can keep building off that. Felt good to get that one.”

Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov would add to the lead, scoring his 11th goal of the season less than 30 seconds after Montour’s.

Florida went into the break up 3-0 on the Oilers, who were 8-1-0 in their last nine entering Saturday.

The Oilers were able to get on the board 8:08 into the second, courtesy of Zach Hyman’s 18th goal of the season. Connor McDavid picked up an assist on the play, extending his point streak to 12 games.

Edmonton picked up the pressure in the second and had Florida on their heels for most of the period.

If it wasn’t for a stellar performance in net from Bobrovsky, the Oilers could’ve made it a closer game in the second.

“It’s fun to play those games against a really good offensive team”, Bobrovsky said. “I was involved in the game and it was fun.”

With the Panthers on the power play, they would reclaim a three-goal lead off a great individual play from Sam Bennett. Bennett capped off a three-point with a nice rush on the power play to score his fourth goal of the season,  putting the Panthers up 4-1 late in the second.

“We needed another line (to contribute) besides the Barkov line and Bennett was great tonight. Their line was great tonight,”  Panthers coach Paul Maurice said.

As they did in the first two periods, Florida would begin the third in the same fashion — scoring goals.

Carter Verhaeghe quickly foiled any hope of an Edmonton comeback just 21 seconds into the period with his second goal of the game, 15th of the season.

Following Saturday’s win, the Panthers are 2-2-o on the road trip with one game remaining.

Florida can finish off their longest road trip of the year above .500 with a win on Monday night in Calgary. This will be the first of two matchups against the Flames.

Panthers Notes

Forwards Anton Lundell and Jonah Gadjovich both missed their second consecutive game due to illness.

Defenseman Aaron Ekblad, who left Thursday’s game in Vancouver with a lower-body injury, was also not in the lineup as a precaution, according to Maurice.

Forward Will Lockwood drew into the lineup after being called up from Charlotte yesterday.

Defensemen Josh Mahura, who picked up a lower-body in November, played his first game in a month — filling in for Ekblad.

More Takeaways from the Dolphins’ Red Wedding on MNF

If the ‘Game of Thrones’ reference in the title flew over your head; rest assured; Monday Night’s televised meltdown delivered a strikingly akin experience.

3 plays from scrimmage, 3 injuries

It took just three plays from scrimmage for injuries to mount. While Jaylen Waddle and Xavien Howard swiftly rejoined the game after a brief stint in the medical tent, the Dolphins’ medical team found themselves working overtime on Monday night.

Regrettably, Dolphins’ wide receiver Tyreek Hill wasn’t able to return to the game as swiftly. While attempting to walk off the field following an ankle entrapment during a screen play gone wrong, Tyreek, clearly in pain, wouldn’t return to the game until late in the second half. He voiced his initial thought of a possible broken ankle during the post-game press conference. Hill said when his injury first happened he felt his “ankle was broken.”

While Tyreek Hill’s injury caused the most concern among Dolphins fans, it wasn’t the sole significant setback for the team. Center Connor Williams was compelled to exit the game after being rolled up on. He remained sidelined for the second half, swiftly ruled out due to the injury. Later we found out he tore his ACL; he’s done for the year.

And from there, things would go downhill, fast.

Missing: The Cheetah and the Echoing Void in the Dolphins’ Offense

In the absence of Tyreek, Miami’s offensive woes echoed the chilling spectacle of disorientation. throughout the half. The team wandered aimlessly, appearing drained and listless. While the ground game found success, the aerial prowess, the very facet that had terrorized opponents all season, struggled relentlessly. As the clock wound down to halftime, Miami trailed 10-7, their solitary touchdown an unexpected Zach Sieler pick 6 on defense.

What happened to the Dolphins defense in the final minutes of the 4th quarter?

In a game where the Dolphins’ defense shouldered the weight of the offense, the defensive unit appeared poised for an all around dominant game until one of the most colossal collapses in recent team history unfolded. Miami had built a comfortable lead of two touchdowns with merely 5 minutes remaining. However, the defense inexplicably succumbed, yielding two touchdowns and a crucial two-point conversion in under 3 minutes of play. This collapse marked a staggering NFL record: teams that trailed by 14 points with only 3 minutes left had won 767 consecutive games until Monday night. However, Monday night’s collapse shouldn’t be solely attributed to the defense. Miami weaved a tapestry of errors, contributing to undoing their own hard-earned advantage. They indulged in a myriad of mistakes, everything they shouldn’t have done, ultimately dimming their prospects for first place in the AFC and inadvertently breathing new hope into Buffalo’s divisional aspirations, squandering a prime opportunity to seal their dominance with a victory.

What’s the deal with this Tua-led offense and primetime football?

The Miami Dolphins haven’t exactly thrived in primetime—at least in the past decade— and Monday night’s performance only reinforced this narrative. Once again, the glare of the spotlight seemed too intense for the Tagovailoa-led offense, particularly at home where they had maintained a dominant, undefeated record throughout the season. Admittedly, the Dolphins were coping with nearly an entire offensive line comprising backups and the absence of the league’s deserving MVP, Tyreek Hill, disrupting their rhythm. Nevertheless, despite a nightmarish start, the situation failed to improve, and the offense struggled to find its footing.

What happens from here?

Reflecting on Monday night’s collapse, the pace at which fortune shifted is noteworthy:

Comparing the team’s previous record of 9-3, anticipating a coveted 10th win and leaving Monday Night Football with aspirations for first place, the Dolphins were riding a wave of momentum.

Miami now grapples with the absence of center Connor Williams (done for the season) and Tyreek Hill’s day-to-day status due to an ankle injury, leaving his participation in the Jets game uncertain.

The lack of assurance casts a shadow of uncertainty over Miami’s postseason aspirations. This air of uncertainty is compounded by the grueling stretch of challenging games looming on the horizon. The reverberations of everything going amiss on Monday night linger, dimming any semblance of optimism.

Coach McDaniel faces what could potentially be the team’s most challenging phase during his two-year tenure. The coming period will serve as a litmus test for the Dolphins’ resilience and fortitude as they navigate this crucial home stretch.

Most Notable Iowa Hawkeyes in History

There’s always a huge space to discuss who’s the best, and in Iowa Hawkeye’s history, it’s rich. Dating back to 1899, Iowa’s football landscape has always been part of the fun and excitement of every football season.

Armed with an education from the University of Iowa, Hawkeye’s finest accomplish many things in different fields, especially football. Many rose to the hall of fame, mastered their field, and showed the world what their State has got.

Debates of who’s really the best are always a fun topic in every college community football circle. In this list, learn about some of the most notable Iowa Hawkeyes and how they left an indelible mark on football history.

Ken Ploen

Starting in 1956, Ken Ploen was the first of Hawkeye’s starting quarterback, who led his team to its first title in the Big Ten Conference after 35 years, boosting Iowa Hawkeyes odds during that season.  This victory escalated more excitement when their team won a major victory in 1957 for the Rose Bowl, and he was later named MVP for his strategic gameplay.

When Ken approached his senior year in the football season, he was awarded an “All-American” and was named Big Ten Conference Most Valuable Player. His legacy of winning the first-ever victory in the Rose Bowl Game has sealed his name to the annals of Hawkeyes’ football greatness.  Ploen ignited inspiration in the hearts of the succeeding quarterbacks.

Randy Duncan

The only player to be drafted to be number 1 in overall selection in Iowa’s football history, Randy Duncan has made it happen. He was chosen by the Green Bay Packers in 1959 for their NFL draft. This only came after Randy had led the Hawkeyes to its amazing journey.

During his time with the Hawkeyes, he was the starting quarterback for two seasons. And in that period, he led the Hawkeyes in the final 10 in those seasons. The Hawkeyes received the All-Big Ten First Team for the second time after Duncan earned it. He was also named Big Ten Conference Most Valuable Player and “All-American” consensus.

Ultimately, Randy Duncan has led his team to the second and last victory of the Hawkeye in the Rose Bowl Game, sealing his name in Iowa Hawkeyes’ finest.

Gordon Locke

One of the football players of Iowa to ever receive “First-Team All-American” twice, Gordon Locke is one of the key players for the Hawkeyes’ amazing three-year greatness that earned the team’s first two championships in the Big Ten Conference.

During his time, the Hawkeyes’ final record was 19-2, earning him “First-Team All-Big Ten” honors twice. Today, his name is in the College Football Hall of Fame and Iowa Sports Hall of Fame. A true feat for his hard work and perseverance during the hardships of the Hawks.

Alex Karras

Imagine the ideal physique of a defensive lineman, Alex Karras is an embodiment of Hawkeyes for that. Many considered him the best for that position to ever play for the Hawks. In two consecutive years, 1956 and 1957, he earned “First-Team All-American” twice.

He was one of the team members during the Hawkeyes, who won their first-ever Rose Bowl game with a final record of 16-2. His display of dominating the defensive line has earned him the 1957 Heisman Trophy runner-up. He also won the Outland Trophy, awarded to the country’s best linemen.

After contributing to the Hawkeyes’ greatness, Alex made it to the NFL. He was drafted nine times for the All-Pro and four times for the Pro Bowler and has played 161 games. His career transition made his name known to every player who aspired from hard work.

Chuck Long

The Hawkeyes’ best quarterback, Chuck Long, holds the record nine times at least. His early span of career as a starting quarterback lasted for four seasons. In this period, the Hawkeyes won at least eight games every season and transitioned to four bowl games, in which they won twice.

Chuck was an “All-Big Ten player” thrice;  “Big Ten Player of the Year” thrice. Plus, he was awarded the Davey O’Brien Award thrice and the Maxwell Award thrice. He was also runner-up in Heisman Trophy races, 7th in 1984 and 2nd in 1985.

Nile Kinnick

A quarterback, defensive back, halfback, kicker, and punter, Nile Kinnick is someone we will never see again. Kinnick embodies “Iron Man,” for he can play at every point of the game, even if injured.

What truly sets Nile Kinnick apart from everyone on this list was his 1939 mind-blowing season. During that season, he carried the Hawkeyes team to an outstanding 6-1-1 score, finishing 9th in the final Associated Press poll.

Kinnick finished 18 interceptions in his career. After that, he won the Big Ten Most Valuable Player Award, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, and the Heisman Trophy. Lastly, he earned the AP Male Athlete of the Year

His name was in the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame. They also named him the historically grandiose Kinnick Stadium.

Final Thoughts

While it remains a debatable topic in every college football circle, the legacy of Hawkeyes’s notable legends inspires and influences those who follow them. And without a doubt, their contribution made Iowa Hawkeyes notable in the country’s football history.
