Miami Hurricanes: Will Mallory named to John Mackey Award Watch List

Miami Hurricanes tight end Will Mallory was named to the 2021 John Mackey Award Watch List on Friday.

Mallory filled in a nice secondary role for Miami last season, as he formed a tandem with Brevin Jordan. He recorded 22 catches for 329 yards and four touchdowns last season. Mallory had many productive games last fall. He had some really good, productive games. One of those games included a two-catch 51-yard performance against Pittsburgh. Both those catches went for touchdowns.

He also played well against North Carolina State on November 6. In that contest, he recorded eight catches for 79 yards and a touchdown.

With Jordan out of the picture, Mallory may figure to play a bigger role for the Miami Hurricanes in the fall. I touched on it a little bit earlier in the week. Mallory has size and ability to run after the catch. That should bode well for him as D’Eriq King looks to play even better than he did in 2020. Instead of playing  the backup role, he will now take center stage.

There are some big-time names on this watch list, and Mallory will certainly have a chance to stand out from the rest of the pack. With how open the Miami Hurricanes want to make their offense, Mallory should be able to have plenty of balls thrown his way. Mallory should figure to be a key part of the Miami hurricanes offense, and it will be interesting to see how he takes over the starting role.

He has as good a shot as anybody to win this award. If he can continue to be a dependable target like he was last season, he has a very good shot. Consistent production from the tight end spot will be key for Miami if they want to contend with the elite of college football.

Miami Hurricanes land Justin Medlock as recruiting continues to roll

The recruiting momentum continues for the Miami Hurricanes, as Friday they landed a commitment from three-star linebacker Justin Medlock.

Medlock is the 48th overall linebacker and his class, and the 67th overall player in his class from the state of Texas per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He was recruited to Miami by special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach Jonathan Patke.

Medlock and other schools on his radar as well. LSU, Ohio State, and Oklahoma were all vying for him. In the end, Miami won out.

This is a huge get for Miami at a position of need as well. The Miami Hurricanes need to continue stocking the linebacker position as that is one of need. They have struggled to develop the position itself, as well as get physical athletes . Medlock checks both boxes.

Medlock brings multiple things to Miami Hurricanes

What could he bring to the table for Miami in terms of play? He is a very physical player who is not afraid to do whatever it takes to win. That sounds cliché, but he can drop back in coverage as well as come up and stop the run. More and more, we are seeing players with versatility in college football. Medlock is certainly versatile.

He is also very strong in terms of pursuit. As soon as he identifies the ball carrier, he can come up and make a play with ease. He takes very good angles to the ball carrier, and that allows him to continue to be involved in the play. in terms of the Miami defense itself, I could see him excelling in stopping the run.

Miami ranked ninth in the ACC with 180.6 yards allowed per contest in 2020. That is certainly not the worst number, but it’s one that can be improved upon. Medlock should be able to help Miami build a strong run defense for the future. A key to success is continuing to build depth. That’s what Miami is doing here at the linebacker position

Currently Miami’s 2022 class ranks 75th overall nationally and 13th overall in the ACC per the 247Sports Team Rankings. This class has been on an upswing over the past couple of weeks, and I would expect more additions sooner rather than later.

This is another big get for the Miami Hurricanes. After a slow start to the 2022 class, this summer has been anything but slow.

Miami Hurricanes safety Avante Williams dismissed from program

Miami Hurricanes safety Avante Williams was arrested early Thursday morning for aggravated battery on a pregnant woman. Thursday evening, it was announced he was dismissed from the program.

A spokesperson from the University of Miami released a statement  Thursday morning  regarding the incident.

What does this mean for Miami Hurricanes?

Heading into the 2021 season, Williams was thought to be emerging part of the defensive rotation at safety. Miami does have depth at the position, which allows them to be able to weather the dismissal of Williams. Bubba Bolden, Amari Carter, and Gervin Hall are all veteran names that will definitely be slotted into the equation at safety.

With that being said, all three of those guys are upperclassman. Once they graduate, depth will be an issue. In that respect, this is a big blow for the Miami hurricanes football program. Williams was one of the top signees of the 2020 class, and he was going to be a staple in the defensive backfield for years to come.

Nevertheless, this is an issue that is much bigger than football.

Gabe Vincent is the True Heat-Olympian to Keep an Eye On

The Miami Heat are clearly representing in this year’s Olympics, and it isn’t headlined on a Team USA roster. It’s actually with Team Nigeria, as three of the Heat’s young projects, Precious Achiuwa, KZ Okpala, and Gabe Vincent, are getting some extra reps.

The main focus seems to be on both of Miami’s recent draft picks, in Achiuwa and Okpala, since experience and playing time is all they really need to make some small leaps in their game. The issue is that there’s some question marks next to their future with the team.

On a team that is going to be fully invested in the trade market, with things such as sign-and-trades, two young and promising assets will come up frequently. As Miami has their eyes on Kyle Lowry, would they have to part ways with somebody like Achiuwa, who they have strong interest in?

It’s definitely a possibility, which leaves us shifting some attention that may continue to go under the radar: Gabe Vincent. He’s had a strong start to these Olympic games in some of the exhibitions in Las Vegas, and that isn’t temporary.

He was placed into an unfamiliar role this past season with the Heat, after playing much more of an off-ball, spot-up type of role in the past. They basically inserted him into starting point guard when some of the unfortunate Covid stuff occurred, which left him adjusting on the fly.

While the on-ball duties were new for him a bit, he ran the offense pretty effectively, and that will look to improve in this Olympic setting. Some extra facilitating and play-making spots in the offense will make him much more prepared for a possible Miami Heat insertion in the future, but when might that occur?

Many have harped on the need of a point guard on this team with Kendrick Nunn most likely taking the best deal this off-season and Goran Dragic possibly being used as a salary filler if a trade deal is going to be made. So yes, a starting point guard is needed with some decent veteran options available, but who will be the back-up point guard?

There are plenty of holes that will need to be filled this off-season, such as a front-court pairing, extra depth, a point guard, and of course the continued search of a consistent three-level scorer. But as time passes, it would not surprise me if Vincent was given a much bigger role to begin the season.

A bench spark who also brings a good amount of defensive physicality is the type of guy they’ve always liked in that role, and it’s obviously a guy that they trust. His development is far from over as well, since he has a full off-season ahead of him, including the Olympics and summer training, to improve some of the things that can get him to that point.

In my opinion, I think a major focus for the Heat will be getting back to the basics, and placing him into his area of strength. If shooting consistency from deep comes back the way I expect it to, he could definitely be utilized regularly as a Miami Heat reserve.

This is a time for all of their young guys to grow as basketball players so they can find their way into the rotation, but the guy that hasn’t been the center of attention for some time, may be the one to come out the true winner of the off-season among that grouping.

And there’s just something about those gritty undrafted guys that the Heat find a major liking for, and Vincent falls right under that category. They have loved his work ethic behind the scenes, and combining some more development with a Heat possible position of need could result in a solution that is right in front of their eyes.

Miami Hurricanes: Offensive lineman Flip Carswell commits to program

The good recruiting momentum continued for the Miami Hurricanes on Wednesday, as they were able to land a commitment from three-star offensive lineman Falentha “Flip” Carswell.

Carswell is the 64th overall offensive tackle in his class, and the 72nd overall player in his class from the state of Georgia pe the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He is ranked numerically as an 87.

In addition to Miami, he also had offers from Georgia State, Georgia Tech, NC State, and Ole Miss on the table. He was recruited by Garin Justice. It is worth noting that Justice has brought in players such as Laurence Seymour, Michael McLaughlin, and Ryan Rodriguez. The offensive line coach has done a nice job at recruiting his position, and bringing stellar talent to Coral Gables.

Carswell visited Miami on June 11.

What can he bring to Miami Hurricanes?

What can he bring to the Miami Hurricanes? For one, he can bring size. He measures in at six-foot-seven, 275 pounds. That size will be important for Miami’s offensive line. Size is prominent throughout college football. The most successful teams, and the ones who make it  to the College Football Playoff all have size. The Hurricanes certainly got that with Carswell’s commitment.

The Miami Hurricanes have grown their 2022 class in the last couple of weeks, and they are starting to build a nice base of players. They currently have five commitments in the class. The class itself is ranked 75th nationally and 13th overall in the ACC per the 247Sports Team Rankings.

It will be intriguing to see who else Miami picks up in the 2022 class.  They are starting to  fill some needs, which is important. You have heard me talk about pipelines at  certain positions and how Miami needs to start building some.

The offensive line is a position group  where Miami could really benefit from establishing continuity and consistency. Getting recruits like Carswell is a start. Hopefully player development and skill will follow the success.

What Would a Miami Heat-Rudy Gay Signing Look Like?

After diving into all of the primary off-season options for the Miami Heat, I’m continuing to go into some of the small ball fours that could possibly be plugged in next to Bam Adebayo in the front-court. There are plenty on the market this off-season, but this specific guy basically forces me into a different writing style.

Instead of focusing on all of Rudy Gay’s strengths, I’m just going to touch on the one offensive ability that sets him apart from the rest.

It’s pretty much known that when the Heat like a certain guy, they somehow find themselves back in contention for that guy down the line. And Gay falls right under that category.

Miami ended up with Trevor Ariza at the deadline, while they had their eyes on Gay up to that point. And here they are with yet another opportunity.

So, let’s get right into why he is so much different than the other options in free agency…

Floor Spacer

To be very clear, although a three-level scorer should be a focal point for the Heat this off-season, it just doesn’t seem possible. Some guys like Brandon Ingram have their name being thrown around a bit, but I would guess that Miami isn’t relying on that option.

That leaves them focusing on the true priority in free agency: a point guard. The money going to that position most likely means another cheap front-court pairing will be the outcome, but what if that spot can be a role player who can score at three levels?

Among some of the other options, there are plenty of two level scorers. Guys like Jeff Green are great beyond the arc and in the mid-range, while others like JaMychal Green are most comfortable from three and at the rim.

There’s always that one area that waves a red flag, but that’s usually what you get with these type of small power forwards. One thing they all have in common though is floor spacing, and Gay clearly provides that.

He shot 40% on catch and shoot threes this past, but that doesn’t mean he is one of those stiff one-dimensional spot-up threats. He can move pretty well, and that type of elusive movement leads to all of his catch and shoot looks in the offense. In a Miami Heat motion offense, plenty of pin-downs and off-ball screens will be utilized to get him free, but that’s not what sets him apart from the others on the market….

Pull-Up Dissector

The mid-range pull-up numbers took a bit of a dip this past season, but some of that has to do with the attempts increasing by a good amount. After shooting 47% from that spot of the floor a year ago, it dropped down to 40% this past season.

Now, even with that slight fall-off, I’m still confident in that ability for him since he has one of those high arching shots that combine with great length on the fade, which makes for a pretty deadly mid-range game for his size.

Looking at the clip above, those two dribbles into a baseline pull-up may look simple, but that could be the difference maker in a Heat offense. They’ve had different front-court trials over the past two years that all played differently, and Gay would do the same thing for next year’s Heat team.

When that spot is filled with guys that live or die by the three, off nights can alter an entire offensive scheme. But a guy that is capable of mixing in that type of play-style can truly bend a defense, which is important for somebody that wouldn’t be a primary player on the roster.

Some of the other guys out there also have a three ball and a mid-range game, so what else is there with Gay?

Physical Attacker

Finally, the completion of the three-levels ends with a capable attacking game, and it adds some physicality. If Miami is looking for a four that can get to the rim a bit, it has to be more of a strong and physical one than a finesse driver.

Gay has shown to be pretty strong on his drives over the years, but once again, this topic is far from being complicated. His attacking doesn’t have to be super versatile or out of control, it just has to be a possibility.

Looking at the clip above, they’re setting him a screen to get him going downhill which gets fumbled a bit. He recovers and turns the corner on the baseline for the dunk. That’s it. If this is the type of route they go, a guy that can just turn the corner is all they need.

As much as I feel that more of a paint presence could be the route they go with the need of rebounding, a player that has been on their radar for some time wouldn’t seem like a shocking option. With Miami’s need of half-court scoring, adding some more of that next to Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Duncan Robinson, and a point guard acquisition can really change the way the offense looks.

Not only in a regular season setting, but a playoff setting. Adding a veteran point guard and Rudy Gay should signal what the Heat are about this upcoming season: trying to win now.

Miami Hurricanes: Will Mallory has a chance to shine in lead role

It was evident last season that the Miami Hurricanes offense relied heavily on the tight end position. With Brevin Jordan having a good year in 2020, one player that really complemented him well was tight end Will Mallory.

Mallory caught 22 passes for 329 yards and four touchdowns. With Jordan battling some injury issues last season, Mallory stepped up. He caught 22 passes for 329 yards and four touchdowns. His best game of the season statistically came against Pittsburgh. In that contest, he caught two passes for 51 yards and two touchdowns.

Mallory was a second part of the dynamic duo that he and Jordan created. He immediately bolstered Miami’s depth at the tight end position when Jordan was out. Now, Mallory is going to have to take over that role with Jordan in the NFL, and not a lot of experienced depth behind him in Coral Gables.

His sure hands and ability to run after the football are reasons why I think he’ll fill the void left by Jordan. As soon as he catches the football, he is able to run downhill. We saw it a ton last year, particularly in the NC State game. in addition, he runs his routes well, and is able to track the football. We saw that in the Pittsburgh game last year, one where he really made the most of his opportunity.

That type of play style is exactly what Miami wants in their offense, and I think Mallory will be able to fit nicely in a lead role. To me,  the bigger challenge for the Miami Hurricanes is going to be who will step up in the secondary role Mallory was in last year. again, it’s not a question of talented depth for Miami, it’s a question of experience.

An injury did cost Mallory spring practices. With that being said, he should be ready for the start of fall camp. Miami certainly needs him to be ready to go.

The 2021 season could be a big one for Mallory. With how often the Miami Hurricanes use the tight end, Mallory should be able to have plenty of chances for success.

5 Takeaways from UFC Vegas 31

All eyes were on the prodigy from Dagestan, Islam Makhachev. With Khabib retiring sooner than expected, expectations for Islam quickly rose. Coming in at 19-1, his record was evident of how good he was as a fighter, but we haven’t been able to see him get tested yet. Taking this fight against Thiago Moises wasn’t the test that we wanted, but we were still able to see how he would fare in the environment of a 5 round fight. And what we saw was the dominance that we would expect from a student and brother of Khabib. He was able to dominate the ground game for almost all 3 rounds and in the 4th, he was able to slip in a beautiful rear naked choke. Many other great wins came from this card including the return of Meisha Tate. Let’s take a look at the top takeaways from this weekend’s card. 

 

  1. Islam Makhachev needs a real opponent 

 

This is no disrespect to Drew Dober and Thiago Moises who are both great fighters. But the time for Islam to take that next step is now. No longer can this man be ducked or denied from anyone not in the top 3. He absolutely dominated his last two fights winning every round of both of them until he finished them with a submission. Islam has shown that he has the talent to be able to beat who you put in front of him handily. Dan Hooker, Tony Ferguson, or Michael Chandler need to be next for him. If Conor wasn’t out for a year I would put him in that list too but Islam deserves someone way sooner. With Islam facing one of these guys, we can now see a true test of what this man is really about. At 20-1 his record is nearly flawless and once he gets a real test in a top contender, we can truly see how ready he is to fill the shoes of Khabib. 

 

2. Meisha Tate is back, but for how long?

 

After taking a hiatus in her career, Meisha Tate returned to get a TKO win in the 3rd over the retiring Marion Reneau. The first two rounds were slow but Tate was able to get control and use her wrestling that we’ve known to come from her. She won this fight, but now we have talks of her facing off against Holly Holm. While she was able to beat Holly the first time, Holly has developed into one of the most well rounded fighters there is, and if Amanda Nunez wasn’t reigning terror over the flyweight and bantamweight division, we could very likely be talking about Holly Holm being one of the greatest female athletes in UFC history. Tate can very much focus on utilizing her wrestling and trying to take Holly down, but it will be much harder with the gap on the feet being that large. We will see if Tate is able to come back and make a solid run here in the UFC for her second stint. 

 

3. Amanda Lemos is the next rising star in the Women’s Strawweight division

 

With her 35 second win, Amanda Lemos secured the second fastest knockout in the Strawweight division. Somehow, this didn’t earn her a performance bonus but it definitely did earn her some respect in the eyes of fans and matchmakers. With two straight knockout wins in the first round, she’s becoming one of very few women who can put your lights out with one shot. That kind of power in this division makes you stand out immensely and having Wallid Ismail cut your promos makes you stand out even that much more. 

 

4. Rodolfo Viera seems to have figured things out 

 

In his last fight, Viera was able to get the back of his opponent, and in one of the most strange occurrences in UFC history, completely gassed out 3 minutes into the fight. It almost seemed like an adrenaline dump which could have been what it was. This cost him the fight and also his undefeated record. Viera hired a sports psychologist to work on breaking through that mental barrier. In this fight, Viera came out much more patient and seemed to have understood how to flow in the octagon much better. For someone who’s touted “ The Blackbelt Hunter” he decided to use his jab beautifully for the first two rounds before taking Dustin Stoltzfus down and winning via Rear Naked Choke. After his win emotions clearly poured out from this guy who seemed to have battle through a lot mentally to be able to make it through this fight. For someone who’s as talented as Viera, I hope this is a sign that we’re turning the page on him and he’s able to take that next step to get closer to competing at the top of the division. 

 

5. The least talked about UFC Cards are the best

 

Although there’s nothing like star power on an UFC card, last Saturday’s fight card showed that even without the big names, the promotion can still put on banger cards. There were only 2 decisions on the whole card, none of them being on the main card. A main card with finish after finish absolutely delivered and for sure left fans very happy. 5 KO/TKO’s, 2 Rear Naked Chokes, 1 Kimura and a partridge in a pear tree was the formula for an amazing UFC Card. Dana White agreed, handing out 4 Performance of the Night awards AND a Fight of the Night award which means 6 people walked out $50,000 richer and potentially their life changed. Hopefully we can continue to see the great UFC cards in the future but one with an 80% finish rate will certainly be tough to beat.

5 Stories to Track in Dolphins Training Camp

As we get closer to the start of training camp, I wanted to let you guys and gals know what storylines I’ll be spending my time in training camp observing. There are other question marks on this team outside of Tua that need answering before we can take seriously this playoff or bust attitude most seem to have. 

Run Game

One of the biggest storylines the entire offseason has been the “need” to improve the run game by drafting or signing elite talent. Names like Aaron Jones, Najee Harris, and Javonte Williams have all been talked about in insufferable amounts, but Myles Gaskin remains as the “workhorse” back heading into the 2021 season. The only addition to the RB room is Gerrid Doaks and Jordan Scarlett, which leads me to believe they expect (or hope) that the Oline developing is how they’ll be able to improve on a rush offense that finished 22nd in total rush yards with 1688, 29th in ypc with 3.9 and coming dead last for the longest run at 31 yards.

Rush Defense

One of the things Belichick always preached is the ability to stop the run first and then worry about the pass second, making teams one-dimensional. Last year at times it felt like teams could run at will against the Dolphins. In 2020 as a team, they finished 16th in overall rush yards p/game given up at 116.4, 24th in yards per away game with 132, and gave up 4.5 yards per carry which were tied for 16th in the league. The team expects further development from Raekwon Davis who at times showed dominance, as well as the additions of Adam Butler, John Jenkins, and Bernardrick McKinney helping add to Baker, Wilkins, and Ogbah who all played well last season.

Battle at WR

Excluding the top 3 guys in Parker, Fuller, and Waddle, the next 3 maybe 4 jobs are up for grabs for players like Lynn Bowden Jr, Albert Wilson, Preston Williams, Mack Hollins, Robert Foster, Malcolm Perry, and others. Will position flexibility help some stay on the active roster like Perry who can play slot, RB, and special teams, or Mack Hollins who can play WR, special teams, and even TE in a pinch? WR4 will be a crucial position on this team as most of the WRs have injury histories so expecting them to play more with one extra game is imprudent, especially when you consider WR4 will be a starter week 1 due to Fuller’s suspension. All the ingredients on paper, are there for one of, if not the most, explosive WR room in the league. It’s almost time to see if they can all put it together on the field.

Co-Offensive Coordinators

Heading into Flores’ now 3rd season and being on his 3rd and 4th Offensive Coordinator makes it a pivotal factor in how this season can go. From everything being put out, it will be a run game/ pass game coordinator situation with Godsey calling the plays on gameday due to his experience doing it with the Texans while having Studesville give major input throughout the week as well as handle anything needed on the field as Godsey will most likely be in the press box. Whatever way they decide to roll, they need to be quick and decisive in the decision because a certain 2nd year QB is fighting for his NFL life and needs people in his corner who are a help not a another obstacle, also I’m not sure how it will look to be hiring your 5th OC heading into your 4th year as a Head Coach.

Rookies & Second Year players first training camp

You know you can’t have a Dolphins article and not talk about Tua, who yes does need to improve but so many other players must perform, and it all starts in training camp to see if they can handle it. Can Brandon Jones, Jaelan Phillips, and Jevon Holland earn the trust of the staff to play large snap counts for 17 games? How about Lynn Bowden, Jaylen Waddle, Salvon Ahmed, and Gerrid Doaks who may all be integral parts of the offense at different points in the season. How are Austin Jackson, Noah Igbinoghene, Solomon Kindley, and Robert Hunt going to respond from shaky rookie years and with some staring at potential position switches to have a chance to play.
